These Prepositions Activities with a Tree and Kite are part of a complete Garden Unit for Kindergarten English Language Learners, designed to help students understand and use prepositions of place through movement and interaction.  Prepositions can be difficult for young learners because they describe spatial relationships.Using a tree and a kite in a familiar garden setting gives students clear visual support.

Flashcards for Sentence Building

Students don’t just memorize words; they learn how to use them in sentences like using the flashcards:
“The kite is behind the tree.”
“The kite is flying above the tree.”

 Play Flashcard Hunt

After learning vocabulary with flashcards and practicing with small cards, students are ready for the most important stage—using the language. This is the stage where students start speaking and using vocabulary naturally.

WHY CUTOUTS ARE SO POWERFUL

Insects Unit cutouts activities for the linguistic competence. The cutouts gives a chance to go deeper into the unit using different materials. Pictures help with understanding.

Play guess what’s in the jar?

Students: a butterfly!
Teacher: Yes! That’s right.

Make patterns with the cutouts
These are important for the students to be able to describe them in a speaking mode, to reproduce them using the cutouts and to create a new pattern they wish. It's a way to experiment patterns in a new way. They will be able to follow a pattern that you say as well.

Students: big bee, small bee, big butterfly, small butterfly.

Use the flashcards to place the cutouts as to where you can find the insects. Here is a small chart that I made up as a guide.

Identify the location of an insect

Use and model the word on. Place the cutouts on the flashcard to show where the insects can be found.
Teacher: The bee is on the leaf
Students: The butterfly is on the leaf.
Teacher: Where are the grasshoppers?
Students: They are on the grass.

 Writing Insects Name

I used fun foam letters to have the students write words along each cutout.
