Zoo or Jungle Theme for the Preschool ESL

Zoo animal cutouts: use them to introduce these new words in a clear way or for drilling the zoo vocabulary words. I have included word cards, that could be displayed on the wall or board next to the cutouts.  By doing this children will retain the vocabulary words and it can be a Pre-reading activity.
The cutouts can be used to describe animal  body parts .
This is a giraffe. It´s brown and yellow. It has long legs and a long neck.
Point to the elephant´s ears. They are big.
Point to the monkey´s ears. They are small.
Point to the elephant´s nose. It´s big.
Point to the lion´s nose. It´s small.
Use these words: tail, neck, long , short, big, small, short, tall, plain, spots, stripes, dots.
Cutouts Game 1: Place the animal cutouts on the board or Wall. Give a soft ball to a student, say an animal vocabulary word and have the student throw the ball to that animal and say the word.
Cutouts Game 2: Place all the zoo animals cutouts on the floor. Divide the class into teams. Give team # 1 a bean bag and directions for throwing the bean bag on an animal as you describe it.
Teacher: It has stripes. It´s black and white.
Student: Zebra (throws the bean bag to the animal)

Counting 1 to 10:  have the children look at the cards and ask questions:
Teacher: How many monkeys ?
Students: There are three.
Teacher: What color are the monkeys ?
Students: They are brown.
Zoo Book: I am in favor of teaching EFL students in similar ways as native English speakers.
Make the habit of reading a book every day in class. In this
book I have included more vocabulary. You can also read
with a different voice for each animal, such as a roaring
voice for the lion. Get their attention by pointing out the body
parts for each animal. Read the book as often as you can
and hand in the book to each group so they can look at it at
their own pace.
Cards: Animal Pairs.   Make sure you have 2 cards for each animal. Hand in a card to everyone. Have them walk around the room looking for classmates with the same animal. Then, have the students with the matching animals stand together and show their animal to the class and name it.
Graph: Ask children to identify all the animals on the graph grid. Graph the favorite animal in the zoo. Graphs gives a time to use math concepts along with language, as you count the animals from the graph, compare or contrast them. Best of all, there´s participation even for the shy students. Plan on how to display the graph. There are many options, depending on your class size.
Pointers:  Use the pointers for reading books or for pointing to the cutouts. I made mine with fun foam zoo animals and wooden dowels.
Zoo Action cards: Head over to this blog and get her action cards for free.By teaching actions, you will prepare your students for grammar in the elementary school years. Use the cards to play the famous Simon says .

Masks:  Have the students mime each animal and the sound each animal makes using them. Here´s my collection.
Zoo Monkey Family for free !! Get all the members with vocabulary cards. Use them to review the family theme.

Balloon Theme for the ELL

This ballon theme can go along with the birthday resources from my other blog posts, look it up under the label birthday.
Get the flashcards, class book and memory game at my Teachers pay Teachers Store all in black and White and colored versión.
Counting flashcards:

Flashcards use:
1.      Hold up the Number Flashcard one by one and have the children identify the number in the balloon.
Teacher: What number is in the balloon ?
            Students: (four).
Teacher: What color is the balloon ?
           Students: (Green).

2. Hang the flashcards in your room and have students point to the number you say.
Teacher: Point to balloon number 6.
Students: Students point and say the number(six).
Teacher: What color is balloon number 6 ?
Students: (pink)

3. Place all the flashcards on the board or bulletin board. Tell the class that you will say a number and they should say the number in the balloon.
Teacher: Balloon number 2.
Students: Blue.
Teacher: Balloon number 2 is blue.
Students: Balloon number 2 is blue.

 4. You can also do this but naming the color and the students say the color.
 Teacher: Red Balloon.

Students: Three.

Teacher: Balloon number 3 is red.
Students: Balloon number 3 is red.

5. Place all the flashcards on the board. Ask the students their age and have them go to the flashcard and point.
Teacher: Ben, How old are you ?
Ben: Five ( points to the Number 5 flashcard)

Class Book: Read the book to the class.

Explain that they will be making another book, called class book. All students will be making a page for this book, so make copies of the last two pages. Your students will fill in the sentence starters to tell their names and how many balloons they have. Then, they draw and color as many balloons they wish and color the child as themselves.

Compile all work into a class book, bind it and read it to the class. Use the front cover of my book to bind your class book. This can be a fun option for your lesson plan. You can also take dictation from your students to complete the pages. By doing this activity in class your students will listen and also respond to oral communication.

I made a black and white version of this book.

Pointer: I made another pointer.  I made mine out of fun foam. Here´s the template. Get it for free at my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

Memory game: it reinforces learning new vocabulary words in a fun and easy way. It  involves finding pairs of identical balloons when all the cards are face down on the table.I made these cards that be printed onto cardboard, there are two versions, a colored one and a black and white. Use this game  for additional practice.

Matching game: distribute one card to each student. When you say go, all the students walk around finding their partner in class and stand beside him or her.

Bean bags : they are easy to handle  and can´t roll away when playing in class.Tossing the bean bag helps  develop hand-eye coordination. Integrating this kind  of motor activities into the classroom, will help our students  in attention, and memory facilitating language learning. So, make some bean bags . Mine is made out of felt and filled it up with rice.

Math: use reused bottle caps as counters, start your collection by asking parents for donations. Match water bottle caps to these number flashcards. This activity is great for fine motor and number recognition practice.

Feelings/ Emotions Theme

This resource is available by request: ei98srlgmail.com

For children, happy and sad are easier to draw on a face than any other emotion. So teach them on the board how to draw a surprised or scared face using the mouth region. Use bright colors for the mouth, such as red or orange.  Have students recognize emotions on pictures or cartoons.

Emotions or Fellings Flashcards: The right hemisphere of the brain is the image brain. Flashcards stimulate the image brain activating the photographic memory. Flashcards with pictures make visualization easier. It will increase children´s reading ability in the future.
Ask: How are you?
Students can point to a flashcard and say: I am happy!
Emotions or Fellings Flashcards

Feelings camera: This printable camera can be used for this lesson or at any time when emotions are an issue in class. Have some students pose an emotion or use it yourself.
I also added some polaroid  blank photo templates for the students to draw their emotional face.

Bean Bag Game: Draw 2 circles with sidewalk chalk o more if you want to review other emotions. Draw a happy face and a sad face on each one. For the circle I helped myself with a Hula Hoop.
Have students throw beanbags onto a face and name the feeling: happy or sad.
Ask individual students if they are happy or sad ,  have him or her make the corresponding expression and throw the beanbag.

The idea of the worksheets is to think out of the box, to take the students a little further than just filling out a sheet of paper. It can serve the purpose to review basic concepts and to continue to a more creative purpose. Motivate the little ones with craft-like activities, giving them lots of  exposure to English. Each child can use his/her own creative way.

Puppets: I made these puppets out of fun foam and added wiggly eyes.
Paper Plate Puppets:Go to www.dltk-kids.com and get the templates. I used white paper plates, painted the face in pale pink. Then, I colored and glued the pieces.

Feelings patterns: using the same faces, I made these out of cardboard. Have children make patterns on the board. Start the pattern with a hapy or sad cutout. Distribute the remaing cutouts to individual students. Elicit the pattern from the class and have the individual students place the cutouts and continue the pattern.
T: sad, happy... What comes next ?
Ss: happy.
Do as many times as you want changing the pattern.

BODY THEME

Puzzle: I was following the book: Sprinkles 2, Richmond Publishing. An activity indicated there, was to color the puzzle, cut it out and have the kids put it together again. You can do it using any clip art or make some puzzles of your nown using people cutouts from magazines.

Game 1: I made a set of shape beanbags out of felt. This same book came up with a great idea. It also comes with pretty cutouts!!! But you can make your own using magazine cutouts. Here´s my pattern, get it for free.
http://es.scribd.com/doc/77054562/Body-Partes-Del-Cuerpo
It´s an easy game, just name a body part and have a student come and throw it to that specific body part. You can make more variations of the game.

Game 2: here´s another game using the body parts. Instead of making the beanbags, make shapes out of fun foam.

Game 3: trace on a big bond paper all the body parts. Then have the students place them as you name each one.

Game 4: What´s missing ? This one is a classic. Play using the same cutouts.

Game 5: Tie crepe paper to some body parts to each student. Play some music, and when you stop it, say a body part, the students have to show it and name the color of the crepe paper attached to that body part.

Students take home their alphabet letter arts and crafts creations, reinforcing learning beyond the classroom and involving parents in their progress. The resource is here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Letter-arts-and-crafts-collection-3378536
