Beach Theme for English Language Learners

Camera Slides: I made this camera slide for reviewing vocabulary instead of the traditional flashcards by placing the words in a context. 

Teacher: I went to the beach and took some pictures.  A beach ball !

Have students name each word.

Cutouts give the students opportunities to use the language.

Game Pass the cutout. Have the students sit in a circle depending on the size of your class. Pass a beach cutout to a student .

Teacher: a beach ball.

Student 1: Thank you. (This student passes the beach ball cutout)

                 A beach ball.

Student 2: Thank you. (This student passes the beach ball cutout)

                 A beach ball. Continue.

Game Step forward:

Stand several students in a line in front of the class. Distribute a cutout to each one. Name a beach item and have the student holding the cutout step forward and say the word.

 File Folder Game: make some file folder games for your class to cut

cost. Games are usually expensive and hard to get. Children can do the activities as independent work time. I created the beach boys and girls as markers. I placed them into binder clips.

Flashcards: use them to reinforce oral language and recognize words. Flashcards work well with visual learners.

Game: Cover the flashcard with a handkerchief, if it is white the better and ask what is it. Then proceed to remove the handkerchief and see if the class guessed the word.

Matching Memory game: this game is not intended to assess memory skills in our students.You can also use it as a matching game of identical beach ball cards or matching the ball to the color word. 

Counting 1 to 10 Beach items: guide your students´ mathematical understanding by making the utterance of a number word correspond to beach items. 

Using a clothesline and clothespin I had children hang up the beach balls.

Pocket Chart: many EFL Teachers don´t use them enough for teaching effectively for multisensory language acquisition. Place all the colored beach balls and then read the phrases to the children and place them in the pocket .Leave the chart up in the class during all your unit sessions, so you can read them again and again. Also, teach children how to place the beach balls and the phrases in the pocket chart slots so they can participate as your assistant.

Beach Scene: I created a beach scene to serve as a background for children to interact. They can draw the sun, decorate the towel with patterns, place more objects on the sand or at the water, the umbrella can be colored in a pattern as well. I also included a shell page from the Sprinkles book. With the shells, the children can color and cut them, and place them on the sand as a big-small pattern, as placing an assigned number of shells on the sand.          Write to me if you want the file.(ei98srl@gmail.com)

 

Write and wipe cards: make this a reusable learning activity. Have the students write the words , then wipe clean and continue . I used different devices to add variety.

 

Beach Bingo: use it to teach beach vocabulary words. I made it as a printable activity for students to identify and color beach related words. this activity creates interest and increases listening skill. Use bottle caps or m&m´s as markers. The bingo cards are for the children to color in so you can make copies for up to 10 children. I also included a blank bingo card so children can draw their pictures if you have bigger classes. Make 2 copies of the Teacher´s bingo board, one for placing the pieces that you name and another for you to show to the class.

Book: having your class equipped with books is not easy  in foreign countries. Teach them to read according the age that is appropriate to your country. Have print all around the room in an informal manner. There is no need to make them read in the preschool years.

I placed the letters in an old file folder with clear plastic sheets.

Students can easily write the starting letter with a marker and the erase it using wet wipes. 

                              Older students can write the Word.

Clothes Theme for Preschool ELL

Make the children interested in language, capture their attention. Make things easy to understand. Use lots of repetition through a variety of activities.

1.T shirt decorating.

Students can learn language through art, promoting creativity. In Ruppert’s study he found that, “certain forms of arts instruction enhance and complement basic reading skills, language development and writing skills.
Use my template and print out the t-shirt, that students will decorate using their imagination and surfacing their emotions.

Give them stickers, markers,etc.

2. Cutouts are valuable because there are good motivators to teach, practice or review the vocabulary words in each unit. Use them to practice grammar structures or for speaking activities. Most book series bring their in their teacher´s set.If not make your own using clip art from the web and make your set.

Cutout activity1 :

Teacher: This is a shirt. (Showing  the cutout)

Students: This is a shirt.

Teacher: What color is the shirt ?

Students: blue.

Teacher: It´s a blue shirt.

Students: It´s a blue shirt

Cutout activity 2 :

Have students sort the clothing items by observing, comparing boys and girls clothes.This activity help to  create  awareness that is important for math learning in the future.

Cut out activity 3: Just display the doll poster and have students name each  clothing item as you put on the clothing item on the girl.

3. Clothesline: Hang the clothesline in class. Distribute the coloring cards to some students. Start by calling individual students to hang up their cutout in an established pattern.

Patterning is a basic math skill but it can develop speaking skills as children “read” the patterns. I only use the easiest ones referred to as AB, such as dress, skirt, dress, skirt, or, purple dress, orange skirt, purple dress, orange skirt.

 These cards sets are from two of my favorite books for teaching.  Have students color the pictures using a different color for each picture or you can color them and use them as playing cards. Make sure to have two clothing items in the same color to make patterns.

Other games:
Game 1: hand out a coloring card to each student . Hold up a cutout. Ask all students to identify your cutout and the students who have that clothing card to hold it up and show it to the class.
Teacher: What´s this ? Students: It´s a dress,
Teacher: Show me a dress.

Game 2: Give out the coloring cards, make sure to have two or more of each, have students walk around and find another students or student that have the same clothing item and stand together. Do the same but with the same color clothing item.

4. Symmetry: Fold symmetrically in half different clothing items, just like ones below. Ask children if they can recognize what they are, showing only one side of the item. You can do it with magazines.

Have the students notice that Symmetry can be found in everyday items, such as their clothes.

5. Fashion Catalog:  This group work will give learners the opportunity to learn to work together to reach a common goal, which is putting together their book.

 Divide your class into small groups and give them old magazine and a paper with the assigned clothing item. The children will look through the magazines that specific clothing item, cut out pictures and glue them onto their assigned paper.

 Then have the groups come up to the front of the class and show their pages and name the color and quantity.Put all the paper together and make a book.

7.Puzzles: I made these puzzle using old magazine pictures .This simple puzzle can  help teachers observe their children and assess their understanding of the vocabulary words. Hand out all the pieces of the puzzles to all the students. Have them walk around the class finding their partner to complete the puzzle, while you  monitor their speaking.

8.Paper dolls: try getting some paper dolls on the web and enlarge them  or make sets for each group of students. I made my own dolls, go to htp://www.makingfriends.com/f_Friends.htm. They have a huge selection of clothes for the dolls and you can choose the ones that adapt to your class needs.

9.Prepositions: Place a chair and an open box like mine in front of the class. Place some real clothing items in and on the chair and box. Start asking questions, as if you had lost something.

Teacher: Where are my socks?  OH! Here they are. The socks are on the chair.

Students: The socks are on the chair.

Teacher: Where is the skirt ?  OH! Here it is. The skirt is in the box.

Students: The socks are on the chair.

Grammar point: notice that when teaching this theme, introduce the plural for  socks, pants, shoes, saying They´re pants and contrast with This is  a dress.

10. Worksheets: here is one that I adapted. Children have to color the clothes, cut and paste the missing clothes to make the correct pattern.

Halloween ideas for Kindergarten English Language Learners

1. Another cute idea from www.kidssoup.com, using plastic plates.It comes with a cute poem.

2. Lacing cards: an extra activity for fine motor skill, I made them out of fun foam for extra durability.

3. Door hangers: something cute and easy to make for your classroom door.

4. Roll a dice: kids love to play with dice, it´s a nice way to practice number recognition and body parts. Find it at www.makinglearningfun.com.

5. Draw the face details: www.dltk-kids.com have all the printables for this fun activity, in which the kids have to draw the face details on many Halloween characters, it´s a nice way to review face parts.

6. Books: Love making books, I try to make a new one each year so the collection can start growing. As an EFL teachers, there aren´t many resources around. I found the 5 liitle ghost book at www.kidssoup.com, you do need a suscription, but it´s worth it. 

The counting book can be found at www.prekfun.com.

7. Pointers: I made these pointers using the templates at www.dltk-kids, and glued them onto balloon sticks. They can be used as pointers in class or as flashcards.

8. Name Tags: I always make name tags for Halloween parties. Punch a hole and place a ribbon.

9. Crowns: Making crowns is fun, here´s another one that I made only using bat shapes.

10. Math: Here are some ideas for counting.

11. I love finger puppets, I made a few. I got the printable at www.kizclub.com.

The kids colored them, but I thought it would be better to paste the puppets onto fun foam, so they can last longer.
