Activities and games to build vocabulary  for seasons, weather words & simple sentences
 Ideal for kindergarten & 1st grade ESL students!

Weather Graph: it´s easier to do graphs when you have small groups, but when you have more than 30 children in a class you can still do it but have everything ready. Use the  cutouts or  the weather puppets. Collecting data and organizing it can be done in a variety of ways. Comparing results makes the vocabulary meaningful to the students.

Weather puppets to engage preschoolers through play and creativity. 

Have the students create their  puppets  or have some ready to use. Show each weather puppet and ask:How´s the weather ? Ss: It´s sunny.
Ask another question: Do you like sunny weather ? Ss: Yes !

Besides having the puppets , wear a Weather Crown.  Make it for you or for the child(ren) out of construction paper. Your students will love the special crown.

Learning nursery rhymes as children immerses them in the culture of the language, besides it helps with pronunciation, vocabulary and the language rhythm .Send in the rhyme paper home so parents can sing it along.

Craft projects benefit students by applying English to art. It makes weather vocabulary easy to remember.

You can use my weather dial or design your own. Have yellow tissue paper for making the little balls for the sun, silver glitter for the snow, cotton balls for the clouds. Have the students identify each weather symbol. Help the students assemble the wheel. After the dial is ready, name a weather word and have the students move then arrow to the symbol and repeat the word. Have them look out and say How´s the weather today ? and point to the arrow towards that symbol. If you want this file, write an email: ei98srl@gmail.com and I´ll send it to you.

I love my pocket chart, it can be used for every class. It not only saves you time as you are not writing on the board and it is very interactive, since any child can place the weather strip on the pocket chart every day. 

 And no lesson is complete without a book.Students practice describing the weather in simple sentences.

       Just three Weather worksheets to add up to the theme.

worksheet 1:   The first page of all my worksheets are flashcards. It´s a simple resource, but we never have enough for each child. That´s why I created this page as a flashcards for all of your visual learners. Children will color them as you guide them or as they wish and make them colorful.  I also include the written word that is traceable.

Use them to present, practice or recycle the weather words. Prepare some games that be carried out in small groups. Then can take them home and play with their parents.

You can place them on cardboard to make sure you can't see through them.

And for your kinesthetic students use TPR activities: Stick the flashcards around the room and say a word and have the students point to it. Students can act as teachers and give the instructions . 

worksheet 2: Children need to talk about numbers at the very beginning. Let them experiment with basic math concepts and the language of math. I drew a raindrop onto paper and then traced it onto fun foam to create a raindrop to glue onto a yogurt bottle cap. That way I created a stamp to color the umbrella. Then, I had the students cut the raindrop numbers and the umbrella. I had then glue all the pieces onto colored paper and place the raindrops in a number sequence. Students can also place them on the umbrella or on the ground. The possibilities are many.

worksheet 3: Enhancing children understanding of the weather is teaching beginning science concepts. I placed children in 4 different weather scene  to be matched to the correct weather item.

worksheet activity 1. Have children match the weather from each flashcard from worksheet 1 to the children in each weather scene in worksheet 3. They can glue together each set onto different color cardboard.

worksheet activity 2. Since the flashcards are big and the weather cards for the worksheet 3 are small you can do a sorting activity  into big and small.

SO, what is new?

First a game board. Just to add a little cooperative learning to the ESL classroom setting. I taped a metal clip that I opened onto each game marker. Students say the name of the weather where they land and say the numbers of the die as they move on the squares.

Mobile! The good thing about them is that they go with theme and can be done with anything, I used a hanger and half of a plastic plate. Even though they are simple to make so children might need assistance and that is a chance for you to speak about the vocabulary words. After all it is a nice decoration for the classroom.

After they are done, students can say all the vocabulary words as they point to them. Here is a short video.

I haven’t created more awards in all this time. I saw these tickets and thought of how it is for children to receive an award. Give them at the end of the lesson assessment.

Farm Animals Theme for Preschool ELL

Let´s start with the Farm Animals Worksheets:

 Worksheet 1.  This first worksheet I use it to introduce the vocabulary and then turn them into cards for games and then into cutouts for crafts.
Have the students color each animal in the corresponding color.
Teacher: Look at the cow. Color the cow black and white.

Make pointers out of crafts sticks and sticky notes. Hand in a pointer to each child and have them read each farm animal as you name them.

Teacher: duck !

Students: Duck. (Pointing to the duck)

You can also make circles the same color as each animal. Give them a bunch of circles.

Tell them that they have to grab a circle of the color as the animal you name.

Teacher: Pig.

Students: Pink. Pig. Pink pig ! ( Place a pink cirle on the pink pig)

Cut all the cards and have the children make patterns by using their cards.

Make a display using egg cartons. Turn them upside down and have the students place the animal cards in the order you assign them. 

Teacher: cow, hen, sheep.

Have the children name more sequences.

Or make a mobile by cutting all the animals.

Worksheet 2. Make a farm scene. Students cut all the animals. Give each table group a barn. Glue the barn onto an empty towel paper roll.   Have the students tape an open paper clip to each animal so it can stand by its own. Have the children place their animals at the animal scene and name each one.

Ask questions about the color of the animals.

Teacher: What color is the pig ?

Students: It´s pink.

Or make a farm  slip through the door flashcards.I cut the door of the barn annd previously has glued one flashcard next to the other to make a slip of paper with the farm animals. Have the students name each animal as it goes through the doors.

Worksheet 3. Cut and glue the animals on the barn scene. 

Then do a speaking activity using the worksheet. Watch the video.

Farm unit Worksheet  4. Review the body parts and relate them to the animals.Have the children say which body parts are missing and draw them.

Worksheet 5. Review the numbers by adding spots on the cows.

Worksheet 6.The Farmer´s wheel.

Teacher: What is this?

Students: It´s the cow.

Worksheet 7.  I added a tail to each animal using colored yarn.

Worksheet 8.  I always add my favorite animal frame. It can be used for Show and Tell or for Graphing.

This is a farmer trace book for reviewing numbers. Students have to cut the farm animals and paste them where they belong. Trace all the sentnces and make a book using yarn. Then, take home to read to their parents.

I also added some numbers, they can be used to match each page.

I made  dice, one with numbers and another one with farm animals.

Print more than 6 cutout animals. Make big dice, one with numbers and another with the animals. Have three students come to the front. The first student rolls the number die and says the number. The second rolls the animal die and says the animals name.

Student 1: five

Student 2: pig

Student 3: five pigs ( attaches five pigs on the farm)

I always include flashcards. I know that many teachers love them.

Using the tablet for teaching with flashcards during the distance teaching. I sent the flashcards file to the students and had them listen to the video and repeat and do the same.

Letter arts and crafts. Lots of teachers have bought my products with Letter Arts and Craft. I know that it´s a plus to have this resource on hand.

Farm Animal Bodies. Cut and paste!

And animals eat, just as I did with pets and zoo animals.

I researched what these animals can eat. Here´s a list:

Cows: grass, maize, hay, turnips, beet

Sheep and goats: grass, hay, maize, beet, clover, corn

Pigs: turnips, vegetable,  fruit, corn, plants, grapes, apples, potatoes, peppers, celery, acron, grass, mushroom, corn, hay, pumpkin, beets.

Poultry - chickens, turkeys, quails, ducks and geese - grass. 
Ducks small fish, snails, grass, frogs, fruits. 
 Hens   grass, vegetables, seeds, grains.
I glued the cow onto a box and cut a slit on the mouth.

Sort the animals by pets, zoo and farm animals.

Just as I did in the animal posts, I included the cow family.

 Bring in pictures as in the file  here or real objects related to each profession:

Stethoscope for doctor,Plane for pilot,Hose for fire fighter,Cook´s hat for chef, Chalk and eraser  for teacher, a phone and computer for secretary, a briefcase for bank manager, a letter for a mailman, a tooth and tooth brush for dentist.

Have students pretend they are doctors using the stethoscope. Do the same with all the other community members.

                         Teacher: Let´s pretend we are doctors.

 Cutouts: Explain to the class that people dress for the different professions. Use the cutouts for this activity.

Teacher: Look. Who is he ?

Student: He´s a firefighter.

Teacher: What´s the firefighter wearing ?

Student: He´s wearing black and yellow coat, green pants and blue boots.

I placed the community helpers cutouts on toilet paper tubes. They are easy to handle and can be used as puppets.

 Invite several students to the front and give each one a toilet paper tube puppet. Name different workers and have the student holding the corresponding puppet step forward , show it to the class and name it.

Have the class describe what the workers are wearing.

Cutout Game: Play Riddles. Choose one of the community helpers and make sentences about him/her. The children guess who it is.

Teacher: He´s wearing a white hat.

Children: It´s the cook.

Mobile: With the cutouts you can make a mobile with a paper plate. Review the vocabulary words using the mobile. It can be a class decoration.

  

 Community Helper Class Book. Divide the class into groups. Assign a community helper to each student on that group,  give them one of the templates provided with the occupation word. Have the students draw or cut out from a magazine their assigned worker. Have them trace the worker word or write it in the space provided.

Collect all the papers and staple them together to make a book per group. Invite a group member or all members to point to different pages from their book and show it to the class. I created a colored a black and white version for each community member.

Community Helper Printable Books: I made more books that can be read in class. I tried to use the vocabulary and structures that are appropriate for the level. There´s a colored version and a black and white version that you can color.There´s the fire fighter, the doctor, the teacher,the police officer. You an use them as coloring books.

I can create  another community helper book  if you need one, just let me know.

Badge: here´s a badge that I created after you have assessed the unit. The line is for the student´s name. I placed mine onto fun foam and a pin on the back.

Pocket Chart:  I bought this pocket chart long time ago and hardly ever make any activities to go with it. I included ambulance, police car, fire truck,  and bus. Use it to review colors and transportation vocabulary.
