Students: Brother!

Teacher: Yes, the Gingerbread brother!

Christmas in July printables

Lay out the family members flashcards on a table, shout out a word of a Gingerbread person, and have students race to slam the correct card. The student that slams first will keep the card. The winner is the one with the most flashcards.

Play pass and say! Students stand in line, one next to another. One student grabs a flashcard, says the name and passes it to another student. Students keep going until all the cards have been passed until the last student.

 Gingerbread Family Board Game

Print the templates, find the dice and prepare the player pieces. Each player rolls the dice and moves forward along the simple path. Depending on where they land, they will say the family member's name: Gingerbread Dad!

The first player to go to the finish space wins.

The cup game is perfect to encourage collaboration, to build listening and speaking skills as players describe the family members. Tape the words onto cups. Students will place the cup on top of each person.

This is a hands-on activity. Cut a large opening for the “mouth” where students can insert the family cards. Students then need to say the word and "feed" the Gingerbread Person.

Students can create their puppets. Many of them will feel more comfortable speaking through a puppet. Ask them to move a puppet and say: This Gingerbread Mom.

Worksheets can provide structured practice. Students will color the word of the images of Gingerbread family members as you dictate:

Color the word mom blue!

Students color each family member in the same color.

Christmas in July worksheet

Worksheets allow students to practice in a fun way. They will follow the path to matching grandpa to grandma. When that is done, say a command and students do the action accordingly.

Teacher: Circle Gingerbread Mom.

Combining vocabulary topics is a powerful way to help preschool ESL learners build confidence and deepen their understanding of English. By connecting clothes vocabulary with previously learned face vocabulary, students can make meaningful connections and use language more naturally.

In this Clothes Unit for Preschool ESL, these activities integrate facial features and clothing vocabulary to create engaging and interactive lessons. This approach helps learners review, reinforce, and expand their language skills in a fun and effective way.

These activities are part of a complete teaching unit that includes flashcards, small cards, worksheets, games, and crafts — everything you need for low-prep ESL lessons.

 Clothes with a  Face Flashcards

Clothes with a face Flashcards includes depicting different facial features (e.g., eyes, nose, mouth). These include different items of clothing: jeans, shoe, boot, sock, hat, skirt and shirt in different colors. Flashcards can be used to form simple sentences: It’s a yellow hat!

Interactive Flashcard Activities (TPR + Movement)

Incorporate actions into the flashcard activities. Show a card with a face and have students can touch their own faces and name the parts.

Teacher: What is this?
Students: a shoe!
Teacher: Look at the eyes! Touch your eyes!
Students: eyes!

Creative Drawing with Flashcards

Flashcards are a dynamic and engaging tool that can hold the attention of young learners. What about placing the card inside a clear plastic sheet and having the students color and draw the parts of the face. My example is with a boot, but students can do it with any other flashcard and show their work.

Using flashcards for drawing activities encourages creativity while reinforcing vocabulary, take a look!

Small Cards & Word Building Activities

There are the small cards for printing purpose and for using with small groups. Enhance literacy skills for kindergarten English language learners by building clothing words. Ask students to use the magnetic letters to spell out the word that matches the picture.

Worksheets (Face + Clothes Integration)

Print the Worksheets that integrate facial features and clothing vocabulary. Reinforce vocabulary recognition as you dictate how to color the parts of the body: Color the eyes green!
Teacher: What’s missing?
Students: the ears!
Teacher Draw and color blue ears.

Worksheets that combine facial features and clothing vocabulary help reinforce learning through structured practice.

A pair of dice and a worksheet work for fun. Have the dice ready as they are easy to assemble Students throw the dice and color as the dice land. In this example: a purple boot.

When all the items are colored, have the students describe them to you. They can cut the items and create a small closet. Add chenille behind the items to hang and an opened clip to the items that stand.

Games (Face + Clothes Integration)

The goal of this game is to connect all the dominoes by matching the images with another correct picture.

Print, cut and have the domino tiles ready to play. Mix the tiles and distribute them among the players.  One player starts by placing a domino on the table. The next player must place a domino that matches the image on either end of the first domino. By matching pictures to pictures, students reinforce their understanding of the clothing vocabulary in a playful context.

Using pocket charts is an interactive and visual approach that helps reinforce vocabulary while engaging students in hands-on learning.

Students match the picture cards with the correct word cards. Have students take turns selecting the correct word card and placing it next to the corresponding picture.

Students practice forming phrases.

Students can complete sentences.
