Halloween Flashcards

Introduce the new Halloween words: bat, witch, Mummy, Ghost, Frankenstein, Dracula. Ask the students  where are the Halloween characters.
Teacher: Where is the ghost?
Students: In the car!
Teacher: What color is the car?
Students: yellow!
Teacher: The ghost is in a yellow car!
Have the students say similar sentences for the rest of the flashcards.

Bowling with Small Cards

 Place the small picture cards on binder clips so they can stand upright like bowling pins. Arrange the cards in a row or a triangle on a table or the floor. Students take turns rolling a small ball to knock down the cards. After each roll, they name the Halloween character or vocabulary word on the cards they knocked down. For an extra challenge, students can use the word in a sentence or spell it aloud.

Toy Cars Board Game for Young Learners

Students roll the die, move their character around the board, and name the toy shown on the space where they land. The game can be played in pairs or small groups, making it perfect for centers, review lessons, or early finishers.

Variations:

• Vocabulary Practice: Students simply name the toy.
• Sentence Practice: Students make a complete sentence using It's a...
• Question Practice: Ask a partner, "What is it?" before answering.
• Memory Challenge: Students must remember and repeat the toys from their previous turns.

Designed for young learners, these engaging cards help students practice number recognition, counting skills, one-to-one correspondence, and quantity identification in a seasonal and hands-on way.

There’s a set of small cards numbers 1 to 10 to use for small groups teaching or even online.

Halloween Worksheets

 Just a few worksheets to spice up the lesson.

Worksheet1. A simple listening worksheet.

Teacher: Find number 1! Color number one green!

Continue with the rest.

 Then, have the students point to each number as you name them.

Teacher: Show me number two! What color is number two?

Students: orange!

           Worksheet 2. A set of cut and paste worksheets.

 Each student receives a worksheet with spider webs containing different numbers and spider numerals. As the teacher gives color instructions, students carefully listen and color the matching number and its spider web.

For example, the teacher may say, “Color number 5 yellow,” or “Color number 2 red.” Students must identify the correct number and color both the number and the web the assigned color. 

After completing the coloring worksheets, students can continue practicing number recognition with this fun hands-on matching activity. First, students cut out the spider numeral cards. Then, they carefully count the spiders on each web and match the correct numeral card to the corresponding web.

This follow-up activity helps reinforce counting skills, number recognition, and one-to-one correspondence while giving students an opportunity to work independently.

Halloween Feed me bottle or box

  Assembling the Feed Me Bottle

Create a fun Halloween math center with this easy-to-make Feed Me Bottle game! Simply print the bottle template and candy number cards, cut out the pieces, and glue the monster template onto a recycled plastic bottle with the top section removed. Next, cut out the candy numbers and place them beside the bottle. Once assembled, students are ready to practice number recognition and counting by “feeding” the correct candy numbers into the monster’s mouth. This hands-on activity is perfect for building fine motor skills while making math practice exciting and engaging! 🎃👻🍬

Say a number and a student picks up the candy with that number and feeds the vampire.

Match the candies cutouts to any of the other cutouts from the resource or any other cutouts that you might have.

Halloween Number Matching Activity: Number Words, Numerals, and Candy Corn Quantities

Teaching numbers becomes much more meaningful when children can see, read, and count them in different ways. This fun Halloween-themed matching activity helps young learners connect number words, numerals, and quantities while developing important early math skills.

In this hands-on game, students match three different cards:

🎃 A numeral card (1–10)
🍬 A candy corn quantity card
📝 A number word card

Children carefully count the candy corn pieces in each jar, find the matching numeral, and then connect it to the correct number word. By using visual, symbolic, and written representations of numbers, students strengthen number recognition and build a deeper understanding of number concepts.

And do you need more games? Maybe for the Halloween party. Just print the game board, it comes in two different sizes.

St. Patrick’s Day and Colors — A Fun Way to Review Vocabulary with Young ELLs

Review color vocabulary while introducing holiday words in context.

🍀 Why combine colors and St. Patrick’s Day?

Color vocabulary is one of the first language sets young learners acquire. However, students need many opportunities to revisit and recycle these words in order to retain them.

By embedding colors into a St. Patrick’s Day theme, students were able to: connect familiar language with new holiday vocabulary.The shamrocks, rainbows, coins, and festive images created an immediate sense of excitement in the classroom.

🍀 Introducing vocabulary with flashcards

I started the lesson using St. Patrick’s Day color flashcards. Students quickly identified the colors while also noticing the holiday symbols.

We practiced through: choral repetition, pointing games, “What color is it?” questions

🍀 Hands-on practice with matching activities

Next, students used mats and cards to match color words with shamrock pictures. This activity encouraged reading readiness while keeping the task visual and concrete.

I love this type of activity because it supports: emergent reading, fine motor development, cooperative learning, independent practice

Students were very focused and proud when they completed their matches.

🍀 Learning through games

Games are always the highlight of any lesson. During this unit, students played:

Bingo using colored shamrocks

Memory with calling cards printed twice

Domino matching shamrock colors

These activities provided repetition without boredom and created many opportunities for spontaneous language use.

🍀 Color words cutouts

Students match the color word cutouts to the corresponding cards by reading the word and placing it over the correct picture. This hands-on activity supports word recognition, reading readiness, and vocabulary reinforcement in an engaging and meaningful way.

🍀 Independent work with worksheets

To consolidate learning, students completed coloring worksheets where they followed color words to color each shamrock correctly.

This stage allowed me to observe:comprehension of color vocabulary, listening accuracy, pencil control, task independence.

It also gave students a product they were happy to take home.

This St. Patrick’s Day and Colors lesson reminded me how powerful theme-based recycling can be. When familiar language appears in a new context, students feel successful while still learning something new.
