Thanksgiving Sharks Activities for Kindergarten ELLs

This resource is included in the Sea unit for Kindergarten English Language Learners at this link: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sea-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-29-8348964

Students learn Thanksgiving words to expand foundational English vocabulary in a fun way. Activities are designed with simple visuals, large images, and clear vocabulary, making it easier for beginners to understand without needing long explanations.

Vocabulary Introduction with the flashcards. Show them one by one and teach the vocabulary (cornucopia, turkey, pie, hat, etc.). Students repeat.

Teacher: What is this?

Students: It’s a shark!

Teacher: The shark has a cornucopia!

Touch and Show” Game.Place the flashcards on the the floor. Call out: “Find the shark with the pie!” Students run, touch, or point to the correct card.

Small cards for Sentence Practice: “The shark has…” Students make simple sentences: “The shark has a turkey.”  Add actions or gestures for extra fun.

Feed the Turkey Game. Students choose a small card, name the Thanksgiving vocabulary, and “feed” it to the turkey by placing it in the turkey’s mouth. For this game prepare the box using the template provided.

In this creative worksheet, students color and decorate the shark to turn it into a Thanksgiving character. They can add Pilgrim clothes, Thanksgiving foods, or festive items to complete the picture. Then they finish the sentence “My shark is a ______.” This activity builds vocabulary, encourages creativity, and helps students practice simple descriptions in English.

In these worksheets, students read the color word on each shark and color the picture correctly. This activity helps young learners connect written color words with their meanings. It’s perfect for building confidence in early literacy and color vocabulary.

Class Printable Shark Book. This printable book features a shark holding different Thanksgiving items. Each student colors one page, following the simple vocabulary on the picture. When the class finishes, all pages are assembled into a group book that students can read together. This activity promotes teamwork, reading fluency, vocabulary review, and pride in creating a shared class book.

The sharks holding crayons make learning color words clear and memorable. Young learners easily connect the color name to the object through visual context, helping them retain vocabulary faster.

Flashcards show a clear image of the shark and the crayon. With flashcards, students can practice speaking in full sentences:
“The shark has a pink crayon.” This builds confidence in using English aloud.

sea animal sentences

Crayon Hunt: Show a flashcard (the shark with yellow crayon”) and have students find a crayon that matches the color.

Flash a card quickly—students must shout the color or say the full sentence:
“The shark has a brown crayon!”

Take a look!

Beanbag Toss – I made my beanbag using an old sock and beans.  Lay the numbers flashcards around on the floor. Learners toss a bean bag towards the card and say the number.

Small cards. I created puzzles using the shark and crayon cards. Cut the color word. Students must match the image to the correct color word, promoting reading readiness, while having fun.

Students can sort the small cards into French fry containers, each labeled with a colorful paint splotch. This activity develops categorizing and sorting skills. As students drop a card in the fry container, they must say the sentence: “The shark has a red crayon.

Worksheets and activities involving coloring or matching can develop both listening comprehension (“Color the shark with the orange crayon”) and fine motor skills.

esl coloring worksheets

Build color word recognition through matching, tracing, and reading with these 3 worksheets.

Students read the word and color the crayon the correct color. Then, as an added activity, they can cut the path.

You can just have the students listen and color the parts of the face on the shark.

Say the part of the body and the color: Color the shark’s head green! Trace the body word and cut them to later glue to label the shark. Review the parts of the body that are common to a person and the ones that are particular to the shark.

Students will listen and color each number that the sharks have. Then, they cut out small cards of sharks. Find a show box lid and fill it with crepe paper and the cards. Say a number and have them find the shark.

Teacher: Number three!!

Students: The shark has a red number three.

Provide mats with color labels. Students sort the words onto the right color mat.

Students assemble the two parts of the puzzle at their own pace, then say the sentence: “A shark with a red crayon.”

Then, mix the pieces face down. Students flip over one of each type and try to make a match!

This colorful board game helps young English language learners recognize, say, and remember the color words.

Assemble the marker pieces available. Each player chooses a shark with a number to be tehri marker. Players take turns rolling a die and moving forward that many spaces. When a player lands on a shark holding a crayon, they must say the color out loud. For extra practice, they can say the sentence: “A shark with a blue crayon.”

Optional: use the puzzle piece, they can show it to earn a bonus turn!

First player to reach the “FINISH” wins!

Use colorful letter tiles to build the color words. You can use the small cards as a reference. This tactile activity supports early literacy and vocabulary development.

Have the students choose a shark flashcard showing a shark holding a crayon. They say the color word out loud together (e.g., “purple”). The, use the letter tiles to build the color word below or next to the card.

Shark Number Matching Mat (Numeral to Word 1–10).

This activity features sharks holding number (1–10) that students match with corresponding number words. It builds number recognition and connects numeric symbols with their written form

Shark Number Matching Mat

Tabletop Sentence Building Cards. Print the pocket chart cards that feature sharks and phrase. It’s a great way for young learners—especially ELLs—to practice color vocabulary, and strengthen word order awareness.

Feed the Shark! This activity features a shark with an open mouth, ready to be “fed” by students using any cards or manipulatives from this resource set—color cards, puzzle pieces, numbers, or word tiles!

Place the “Feed Me Shark” on a container with a cut-out mouth. Provide a set of target items (e.g., flashcards, color word tiles, puzzle pieces, number words, etc.). Call out or show an item (e.g., “A shark with a black crayon!”). Students find the matching item and “feed” it to the shark by placing it in the mouth.

Halloween Sharks for Kindergarten ESL

This resource is included in the Sea unit for K-2 English Language Learners at this link: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sea-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-29-8348964

Using sharks dressed up for Halloween adds an element of fun and excitement that grabs young learners’ attention, making lessons more engaging and motivating.

Introduce new vocabulary related to Halloween using the sharks. Flashcards with the Halloween-themed sharks help students visually connect words with images. Cut the flashcards into 2, 4 or 6 pieces and have the stduents put all the puzzles together. There 7 sharks.

TEFL resource pack for english teachers

Colorful visuals of sharks in costumes help ELLs make associations between words and images. Use the ghost reader to help your stduents say what shark is there on the small cards and to read the word on it. Assemble the reader by adding a craft stick.

Jellyfish at School

This resource is included in Sea Unit for Kindergarten-Holistic English Series #28 at this link:

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sea-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-29-8348964

I love to cross the different themes to provide opportunities for reinforcement of key vocabulary from another unit. Integrating the school unit either the sea unit keep the curriculum dynamic, fun and engaging for your young learners.

Start by printing your Jellyfish at school flashcards to build more vocabulary and overall learning.

Ask your students what each jellyfish has and write the school word on the board.

Point and speak. I made this pointer with a fun foam piece that I had.
Ask questions: What’s this?
Students: It’s a jellyfish.
Teacher: What color is the jellyfish?
Students: It’s yellow.
Teacher: What does the jellyfish have?
Students: a crayon.

Here's the video with the speaking part:

Small cards with Jellyfish at School. Use these for various interactive activities. Here is one in which students will match the school objects to the ones the jellyfish have.

Teacher: pencil! Find the jellyfish with a pencil.

Student: The purple jellyfish has a yellow pencil!  Students will place a fun foam piece to identify and cover the small card.

A video to see how to use the find and match:

Four worksheets to do a color by the jellyfish. There are short phrases with the instructions in English, reinforcing vocabulary and language comprehension.

Pocket charts. Use the resource to track student achievements. Have them match the school item word to the school item that the jellyfish has in each picture.

Provide tailored learning as creating sentences for students that are ready,

Or model  several sentences for your students to create their own using the pocket charts cards and use their creativity.

Printable book. Making books individually or in groups will allow students to express their creativity even though there is a short paragraph with the colors. But, provide an outlet for them to complete the drawing as coloring the ocean and more items to each page.  They can also say more sentences to write to the story.
