Circus Unit Counting Balls with a Clown for Kindergarten ELLs

The resource will focus on an image of a clown juggling. Make counting practice interactive with the activities. Teachers can introduce new vocabulary words like "juggle," and review "clown," and "ball," while also using terms like "count," promoting both mathematical and everyday vocabulary.


πŸ”’ Counting Practice (1–10)

By counting the balls, students can practice their counting in a hands-on way. Reading the written number words on the flashcards strengthens literacy skills. Print and create a big reader circus ball using the template.

πŸƒ Flashcards for Numbers Review

Flashcards are great for reviewing the numbers 1 to 10 on the board. Place the flashcards in random order. Have the learners come and write the numeral next to each one.

Play a race game. 

Divide the class into two teams. Say a number from 1 to 10. The first student from each team will run to the board and slap the flashcard as they say the number. The team will win a point as they have participated correctly.

✍️ Writing Practice (Small Cards Activity)

Writing number words using the small cards and plastic plates along whiteboard markers encourages students to focus on spelling patterns and sounds.

Enhance Fine Motor Skills using play dough. 

This supports the development of fine motor skills needed for writing. Have the students make balls with play dough to match to the picture. Ask questions: How many balls are there?

🎧 Listening & Coloring Worksheets

Use this Circus worksheet to have learners follow spoken instructions. They should listen carefully and understand directions, which is essential for language development. Listening to the words and coloring helps students recognize the vocabulary.

This Circus Unit color matching game is a fun and engaging way to help young English Language Learners practice colors and vocabulary through hands-on activities. By matching, sorting, and describing circus items, students develop language skills while strengthening cognitive and fine motor abilities.


🎨 Color Recognition & Vocabulary

This activity focuses on helping students recognize and name colors using familiar circus items. By combining visuals with language, learners can easily connect words like red, blue, and pink with meaningful objects.

Find a color matching game featuring all the vocabulary items from the circus.

Students will review the different colors in English developing their cognitive skills.
Print the templates and prepare different games to review the Circus Unit vocabulary.

This game or Circus activity will be focused on the student’s ability to recognize and name the colors of the circus items. Print the color items template and have the students match the color word as they say the phrase: a red tent!

πŸƒ Matching Game (Color + Vocabulary)

You can have all the mats ready as there are clowns, fire rings, tents, cotton candy, stand and ticket. Arrange small groups for the children to play with the different mats. Students will have to manipulate the cards enhancing the hand-eye coordination.

Another way to use the pintables is to create a problem-solving sorting game which will encourage critical thinking. Students sort the cards based on their color. They can also say sentences: It's a pink tent!

There is another set of printables to work with the numbers 1 to 10.  Students will talk about the numbers they see in the balloons and match to the words.

Play the games in groups, as students learn to interact with others and cooperate with their peers as they play. They can match the number word, the balloon number card and place a corresponding amount for each number.

Find the other half game is like a puzzle where students find the other half to complete a card. It comes with a picture and a word.  It has a means on the cognitive development giving the student the ability to reason.

Increase your student’s motivation as they will be eager  to wait to play DOMINO. Students will use their fine motor ability to pick up the tiles and place them where they belong on the game.

If you want to give a twist to the domino, I found this activity suitable for your students. Give a student or students the double of any item and have them find all the tiles that have that item, here is my example using the cotton candy double.

Get students to identify the tiles using the arrow pointer.

Place the tiles on a table, have your students find the items on the tiles as they point and name each one.

A classic for helping with visual discrimination. Students will color each item on their template in one of the colors playing cards. Each item will be in only one color. The teacher will have the calling cards ready.
