 Halloween is the perfect time to review family vocabulary in a fun and memorable way! 

This resource includes three engaging Halloween families—Vampire Family, Ghost Family, and Frankenstein Family—that make learning family vocabulary exciting. Students will identify, sort, count, match, and talk about family members while enjoying Halloween-themed activities designed especially for young English language learners.

Whether you teach in the classroom, online, or in small groups, these activities provide plenty of opportunities for speaking, listening, and vocabulary practice.

Halloween Family Flashcards

Halloween Families Flashcards to sort on the board. Then, ask questions.

Teacher: How many people are there in the Vampire family?
Students: one, two, three, four. FOUR!!
Teacher: Who are they?
Students: Mother! Father! Brother! Sister!

Make the pointers craft stick puppets to point out each Halloween Family member. Use the templates.
Teacher: Point to Father Frankenstein!

Place the flashcards into a clear plastic sheet. Use a dry erase marker to circle or draw the parts of the face as you name them.
Teacher: Circle Mother’s eyes!

There is a Hello hand in the Family Unit resource that can be used to say Hello and Goodbye to each Family Member.

Teacher: Hello, Father Frankenstein!

There is a set of Halloween families small flashcards for small group instruction or online teaching. Use the cards for sorting the people into families. Have the students name all the people in each family group: This is father Frankenstein!

Use the cards for calling the people in the BINGO game. Print the 12 Bingo cards and the family members that are all mixed up for fun.

Play fly swatter! Teacher: Mother Frankenstein!

Number Listening Activity

 The teacher places all the Halloween characters cutouts on the wall, board, or table. The number cutouts (1–9) are displayed separately and kept available for students to use during the activity.

As students look at the characters, the teacher gives oral instructions such as: "Brother Frankenstein is number 8!"

Students listen carefully and then find the correct number cutout to place next to the corresponding character. The teacher can continue with additional clues until all characters have been matched with their numbers.

Use the cutouts for sorting Halloween Families on a pocket chart. You can sort by family members or by Halloween characters.

I taped the cutouts onto straws. I also made a small theater. The cutouts for the theater are added to the resource. I grabbed a box and cut a frame of 10 centimeters, I used rice paper to wrap it. I glued the cutouts onto the theater. Have your students put up a Halloween play.

A Halloween Family puzzle to wrap up the Holiday.

As a craft or a classroom decoration to review the vocabulary. Point to family member and ask questions. 

Or , finally, use the small cards and create a Frankenstein family tree, a Vampire one or even a Ghost Family tree!

Gingerbread Family For Kindergarten ESL

Plan a lesson with the Gingerbread family to provide a fun and familiar theme to captivate your students' attention.  It will support cultural awareness in the classroom.

 Print the Gingerbread family Flashcards to review the key family-related vocabulary.

Use the flashcards for comprehension checks.

Teacher: Who is this?

Students: Brother!

Teacher: Yes, the Gingerbread brother!

Lay out the family members flashcards on a table, shout out a word of a Gingerbread person, and have students race to slam the correct card. The student that slams first will keep the card. The winner is the one with the most flashcards.

Play pass and say! Students stand in line, one next to another. One student grabs a flashcard, says the name and passes it to another student. Students keep going until all the cards have been passed until the last student.

Incorporate the practice of key vocabulary related to the face as a way to enhance their communication skills.

Show the different parts of the face or body of the Gingerbread person using a pointer and have the students name them: What’s this?

Students: The mouth!

Paste the small cards on cardboard and create a poster for your class to serve as decoration and as a visual aid.

Print double cards and have students play memory.

Integrate literacy by using the pocket charts to write the family words using the gingerbread letters in the resource.

Playing games encourages cooperation.

 Gingerbread Family Board Game

 Print the templates, find the dice and prepare the player pieces. Each player rolls the dice and moves forward along the simple path. Depending on where they land, they will say the family member's name: Gingerbread Dad!

The first player to go to the finish space wins.

The cup game is perfect to encourage collaboration, to build listening and speaking skills as players describe the family members. Tape the words onto cups. Students will place the cup on top of each person.

This is a hands-on activity. Cut a large opening for the “mouth” where students can insert the family cards. Students then need to say the word and "feed" the Gingerbread Person.

Create your own set of finger puppets for the Gingerbread family

Show each puppet one by one. Students can name them.

Students can create their puppets. Many of them will feel more comfortable speaking through a puppet. Ask them to move a puppet and say: This Gingerbread Mom.

 

 

Worksheets can provide structured practice. Students will color the word of the images of Gingerbread family members as you dictate:

Color the word mom blue!

Students color each family member in the same color.

Worksheets allow students to practice in a fun way. They will follow the path to matching grandpa to grandma. When that is done, say a command and students do the action accordingly.

Teacher: Circle Gingerbread Mom.

If you need extra support for not translating, use the commands flashcards that I have included in the resource, such as circle, underline and check.

Practice sea animals vocabulary in a fun and interactive way with these Sea Animals Small Cards for preschool and kindergarten English language learners. Sea Animals Vocabulary Small Cards for ESL Students

Develop the speaking skills with this easy activity. Recycle the core langauge from the color unit. Plan this strategy as a communication problem solving activity.

 The resource includes colored splotches that students can use as visual cues while sorting the sea animal cards. Simply place the matching color splotches on the table and invite children to match each ocean animal to the correct color. 

Students can match the colors to each sea creature as they say the phrase: a yellow fish!  Using the cutout helps the students to say the color before the noun. It is a great activity for having the students describe the sea creatures using colors.

Speaking Practice with Sea Animals Vocabulary

As they work, encourage them to say both the color and the vocabulary word, such as "Blue shark," "Green jellyfish," or "Purple seahorse." This sorting activity reinforces color recognition, sea animal vocabulary, reading, and speaking skills while developing sorting and classification abilities. The colorful guides make the activity easy to set up and help young learners work independently during literacy centers, small groups, early finisher activities, or ESL and EFL lessons.

  Then, ask questions:

Teacher: What Sea creatures are red?

Students: The shark and the shell.

Incorporate memory games for your students to play in small groups, turning around the cards as they say which animal they see. These games improve their overall Education.

Make the the activities motivating to keep your students interested. Sort the Sea Creatures small cards by shapes.

Sea Animals Questions and Answers Practice

This activity was easy to make. I folded a construction paper in two and glue the sides, leaving the bottom part open. Before closing the sides with glue open some holes as waves.  Then, paint some waves. Add a craft stick to each sea creature and have your students guess what animal is there.

Teacher: What can you see?

Students: a jellyfish!

Fun and interactive materials are great teaching tools.Use the reader to help with identifying the picture and try reading the word. Just print the template and add a craft stick to the side.

 SHARKS family 

The flashcards with all the family members featured as sharks. Each person has something that is characteristic and you should point it out.

Teacher: Who is this?

Students: Mom!

Teacher: What does she have?

Students will point to the purse. Continue with the rest of shark where students will give a personal response to your questions.

There is a set of small cards. Place them on a table or on the board and have the students point to each family as they name each one. I made a pointer with a lobster fun foam piece that I had and a craft stick.

Student: mommy! daddy! grandpa!

You know that I love cutouts. Made some toilet paper puppets to review this Shark family instead of printing the flashcards. Elicit the names of the family members.

Or make the family unit gloves. I grabbed a pair o bathing gloves and placed some bubble wrap paper inside each finger and then glued the sharks with silicon. 

To wrap up the Shark family, print the two worksheets. One is the family member correspondence. You can dictate the colors: Mommy Shark is purple. Make sure that they color the item that belongs to each person, in this case is the purse. Then, have the students to follow the line from to daddy. Focus on this language content: Who's this? This is mommy!

The other worksheet is a sea scene where the stduents will cut  the sharks from the previous worksheet and glue onto the ocean.

Games help young English language learners develop vocabulary, speaking confidence, listening comprehension, and classroom communication skills through meaningful repetition and interaction. Sea animals themes are especially motivating because preschool and kindergarten students are naturally curious about ocean life and underwater creatures.
