St. Patrick’s Day Verbs Activities for Kindergarten ELLs | Flashcards, Games, Worksheets & Craft

This resource is also included here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Routine-Verbs-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-24-7755611

This St. Patrick’s Day verbs resource uses fun leprechaun actions to introduce classroom routine verbs in a meaningful and engaging way. Through visuals, movement, and simple activities, young learners connect language with daily classroom experiences while enjoying a festive theme.

These flashcards make it easy for teachers to model language, practice TPR activities, build simple sentences, and create interactive games that strengthen vocabulary retention in a meaningful way.

Flashcard Sorting Activity – Morning, Afternoon, Night

Place the St. Patrick’s Day verb flashcards on the board and introduce the time cards morning, afternoon, and night(available in the complete resource). Invite students to help sort the flashcards with you. Hold up one verb card and ask: “When do we sleep?” Encourage students to answer together: “Night!” Then place the card under the correct time heading while modeling the sentence: “The leprechaun sleeps at night.”

Show & Act (TPR warm-up). The teacher will show one flashcard and say the verb: “Jump!” Students repeat and act. The variations can be whisper voice, loud voice, boys / girls, fast / slow. Total Physical Response builds comprehension before production.

Flashcard Corners (movement station game). Place several flashcards around the room. Say a verb: sleep! Students move to correct corner and act. Works beautifully for high-energy groups.

Yes or No game. Show a flashcard. Say correct OR incorrect verb. Students will put their thumbs up/down.

Teacher: Paint! Students with their thumbs up. Excellent listening discrimination activity.

Their small size of the cards makes them ideal for literacy centers, partner work, and interactive speaking practice.

Pick & Act (mini TPR). Place small cards face down on the table. Each student picks one and then says or repeats verb and acts.

Memory Game. Print 2 sets of small cards. Place them face down. Students flip and match identical verbs.

Find your twin. Cut the small cards in two. Give each student a cut card. Students walk and find the same verb. When they meet → act together the verb.  Excellent movement + peer interaction.

The worksheets in this resource help reinforce verb vocabulary through structured, independent practice.

Read, trace, match. Look at the leprechaun pictures around the page. Read the verbs in the middle. Draw a line to match each verb with the correct picture. Then, trace the verbs and color the leprechauns.  Say each verb aloud as you work!

Color by Number. Color the leprechaun using the color key to choose the correct colors.

Write the Verbs. Look at each picture. Trace and write the correct verb on the line. Say each verb aloud as you write. When you finish, color the leprechauns.

Leprechaun Mask Worksheet Craft & Act. Students color the leprechaun as the teacher says. Then, carefully cut out the leprechaun face. Glue or tape a craft stick to the bottom. Have the students hold the leprechaun mask in front of the face. Start the Now listen and act! When the teacher says a verb (jump, sing, read, dance, sleep, wave, paint, play…), perform the action using your leprechaun mask.

Choose a boy or girl leprechaun and have fun acting like a little leprechaun!

These games turn learning into meaningful practice that keeps young ELLs motivated and involved.

Spin & Do. Print the Spinner with verbs. Students will spin and act the verb.

Feed me box. Play Say & Feed. Students pick a small verb card. They must: Say the verb, Act it, Feed the leprechaun.

St. Patrick’s Day and Colors — A Fun Way to Review Vocabulary with Young ELLs

St. Patrick’s Day is one of my favorite Holidays because it combines bright visuals, playful characters, and strong cultural elements that naturally motivate young learners. LINK to the resource: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/St-Patricks-Day-Colors-for-Kindergarten-ESL-15642026

Review color vocabulary while introducing holiday words in context.

πŸ€ Why combine colors and St. Patrick’s Day?

Color vocabulary is one of the first language sets young learners acquire. However, students need many opportunities to revisit and recycle these words in order to retain them.

By embedding colors into a St. Patrick’s Day theme, students were able to: connect familiar language with new holiday vocabulary. The shamrocks, rainbows, coins, and festive images created an immediate sense of excitement in the classroom.

πŸ€ Introducing vocabulary with flashcards

I started the lesson using St. Patrick’s Day color flashcards. Students quickly identified the colors while also noticing the holiday symbols.

We practiced through: choral repetition, pointing games, “What color is it?” questions

πŸ€ Hands-on practice with matching activities

Next, students used mats and cards to match color words with shamrock pictures. This activity encouraged reading readiness while keeping the task visual and concrete.

I love this type of activity because it supports: emergent reading, fine motor development, cooperative learning, independent practice

Students were very focused and proud when they completed their matches.

πŸ€ Learning through games

Games are always the highlight of any lesson. During this unit, students played:

Bingo using colored shamrocks

Memory with calling cards printed twice

Domino matching shamrock colors

These activities provided repetition without boredom and created many opportunities for spontaneous language use.

πŸ€ Color words cutouts

Students match the color word cutouts to the corresponding cards by reading the word and placing it over the correct picture. This hands-on activity supports word recognition, reading readiness, and vocabulary reinforcement in an engaging and meaningful way.

The words cutouts are available at the Colors Unit resource: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Colors-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-2-5956256

πŸ€ Independent work with worksheets

To consolidate learning, students completed coloring worksheets where they followed color words to color each shamrock correctly.

This stage allowed me to observe:comprehension of color vocabulary, listening accuracy, pencil control, task independence.

It also gave students a product they were happy to take home.

This St. Patrick’s Day and Colors lesson reminded me how powerful theme-based recycling can be. When familiar language appears in a new context, students feel successful while still learning something new.

The frog at St. Patrick’s Day

This resource is part of the resource Pets Unit for Kindergarten-Holistic English Series #16. Go to this link: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Pets-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-16-6837926

Generate cultural awareness between your students by showing this unique Holiday.

Start with the flashcards using the frog, which they know from this unit but dressed up with the holiday outfits and has the items used of the celebration. The flashcards are versatile and brings a flexibility for their use. Use them for the students to play individually or in small groups. Adapt to the learning preference of your students present in your class.

If the students are using the flashcards individually place them in a clear plastic sheet and give them dry erase markers to write the word and trace the image.

St. Patrick’s Day

Use the flashcards on the board. Place the frog in the middle of the board and create a mind map by having your students helping you. Ask questions and write the word next to the body or face part.

What is this?
Students: eye!

preschool pets activities with flashcards

Do sorting with all the flashcards. Introduce the activity and have them finish the sorting process.

Teacher: look at the frog! What is he wearing?
Students: hat, shoes!
Teacher: He’s wearing a green hat and green shoes/boots.

A simple game! Stick the flashcards around the classroom. Hand in a clover card to each student. Instruct them to go to a flashcard and place the clover on it. Teacher: Go to the frog that has a green hat and green shoes!

Do some practice and review with this set of  ST. Patrick's worksheets. Build math competence as the ability to to use numbers.

Integrate multiple language skills: listening and speaking, allowing your students to practice the numbers 1 to 10 in a Holiday context.

First, have the students draw the coins in each pot using a yellow marker. Then, dictate the color of each number: Color number three green!

Finally, students will color the coins with the number word and cut them. Paste where it belongs. Ask questions: What color is pot number 9?

Students: orange!

ST. Patrick's worksheets

Make a poster either individually or as in a group and use it for class decoration for the Holiday. Each student will color an item and them create the poster using their imagination.

St. Patrick’s Day and the Insects unit for Kindergarten ELL

This resource is included in the Insects Unit for Kindergarten-Holistic English Series #18. Click here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Insects-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-18-6984205

St. Patrick's Day is a cultural celebration in many countries. Give your students the cultural awareness of this tradition and celebration. I like to include the Holiday into a unit that I am currently teaching or that I just taught and use it as a review.

Language is interactive, so start by showing the Insects in green flashcards in a not real context. They should be able to guess the name of all the insects even in their green coloring body.

Insects in green flashcards

Students can use the small cards for self-paced learning. They can practice the insects words in English with this simple activity. Place all the small cards on a table and a sticker or fun foam piece on each one. As the student reads or says each word they can lift and keep the sticker. Then, they will know which words they were able to say or read.

small cards

These two worksheets are for reviewing the insects and for you to identify any gap in the understanding of this topic. Students will color, cut and paste on the jar or on the clover. Then, they will show their work: This is my clover. It has a bee, a ladybug and a dragonfly.

Find several strips of picture and a word to trace. Students will follow the lines of each letter to complete the word as they will develop fine motor skills much needed at this age. This is an idea that you can implement. Gather old CDs case and place the strip under the plastic and use dry erase markers for tracing.

Print the St. Patrick's Day and Insects domino game and practice the listening skills as the students will listen to your instructions for playing the game and engage in small conversation between them.

Food Unit crafts, rewards and Holidays for Kindergarten ELL

This is a hands-on ESL food activity for preschool and kindergarten students! Get the complete resource here:

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Food-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-15-6741090

food unit lesson plan

These crafts, rewards, and classroom ideas are perfect for Kindergarten and Preschool English Language Learners (ELLs).

Young learners need hands-on, visual, and interactive activities to stay motivated. Crafts and rewards not only make learning fun, but they also help students connect vocabulary to real-life experiences, improving retention and participation.

This post shares simple, effective ideas to help your students practice food vocabulary while creating, playing, and celebrating their progress.

3 Food Unit crafts for your students to participate in creative activities.

Build your ice cream craft

It's a Food Cut & Paste Activity. Students can color each scoop of ice cream and build it. Have them add real sprinkles to the ice cream, cocoa can be added as chocolate. Any other idea?

Lemonade craft

I saw this idea on the mailbox.com newsletter, I just gave it a twist. Print the glass, the lemons, the soda or the milk label. Students can make up their mind to which drink they want to make.

Students can color the glass yellow using a half lemon with watercolor paint. Have them color the lemons drawings and cut them. Glue onto the glass. Trace the cup onto any recycled construction paper. Glue the borders and insert a real straw.
Ask questions:
Teacher: What are you drinking?
Students: a lemonade!

Food Unit Labeling

I made a bunch of labels. Students can color each food word and cut all the labels. This is a start to reading in the future. Students can label the food in the pantry of their house, label recycled food containers in the classroom. Real food can be labeled al home. So many things to do to identify the food vocabulary.

Another idea with the labels is to glue real food onto the labels on a plate.

Do you use rewards either face to face or online?

You always use verbal praise in every class, such as, Very good! Great! But by providing a visual reward it becomes a statement. The students will be more active to participate in class. Making the rewards will not take long hours for you to make. It’s just print, cut and glue onto a ribbon.

I put the image up on Instagram. Follow me there.   https://www.instagram.com/rosamelia_eslteacher/

I like to add the clip art drawings from theme to enhance the cardigan. Just print the graphics. Open a small hole in the middle of each image and pass through the buttons.

Thanksgiving revolves much around food and that’s the focus on this particular material.

First, introduce the new food items that represent the Thanksgiving dinner using the food flashcards.

Then, for extra practice there are the set of cutouts. You can use them to set the table for Thanksgiving and the students can draw their plate with food that they would like to eat.

Make a TURKEY feed me box. You can use it for almost anything. But my example is for the cutouts. Introduce the turkey that needs food.
Teacher: This is Mister Turkey! He is hungry. Let’s feed him.
Display all the food cutouts and do it as a listening activity.
Teacher: Tomas, feed the turkey to the turkey!

feed me box Thanksgiving turkey

A game to wrap up the lesson or to play if you are going to host a Thanksgiving gathering at school.

Bingo is fun and easy to play. Hand in to a student’s template to every 2 students as they can cut and glue only five food items on their plate template or just put them on the table. That will be their Bingo card. Use the colored calling cards as your Teacher’s set.

Happy Thanksgiving!
