Halloween Buckets and Candies Activities for Kindergarten ELL

Combining the excitement of Halloween with a familiar summer theme like the beach captures children’s curiosity and keeps lessons engaging. Students will review and practice a beach-related words such as bucket in a playful and meaningful Halloween context. Perfect for English Preschool Teachers.

Children can describe the Halloween buckets on the flashcards, naming the Halloween characters and items: What is this?
Students: It’s a bucket.
Teacher: Yes! It’s a cat bucket. What color is it?
Students: It’s black.

Match and sort the buckets to the candies.

The flashcards prompt students to use simple sentences such as The Vampire candy is in the Vampire bucket.

Small cards. 

Bucket and Candy Match. Spread out the bucket flashcards on the floor. Hand out the candy flashcards to students. Students take turns matching their candy to the correct Halloween bucket (e.g., Candy corn candy goes in the candy corn bucket!).

Promote active speaking practice using the skull with an open space to encourage students to read aloud and say the name of the Halloween character clearly.

Take a look!

Glue the witch finger pointer on a craft stick. Students can take turns being the “witch” and using the pointer to show any card and naming the character on the bucket.

Play Find and Point.  Spread the small bucket and candy cards on a table. Call out a word: Show me the cat bucket!  The student with the witch finger pointer touches the correct card and says: This is the cat bucket!

Play like this!

Students love “feeding” the skull — it transforms repetition and review into a fun, hands-on game. Play Feed the Skull! Place the cards face up on the table. Call out a word: Feed the candy corn bucket! Students find the correct card, say the word, and “feed” it through the skull’s mouth.

Memory Game. Place the cards face down. Students flip two cards at a time to find a matching pair. When they find one, they must say the words aloud: A vampire bucket and vampire candy!

A cut and paste worksheet for the students connect the Halloween character words (like witch, mummy, vampire, ghost) through picture association.

Worksheet. Students draw and decorate their own Halloween bucket and show their bucket to the class.

Coloring Worksheets will reinforces color vocabulary. Students review and apply color words like orange, black, purple, green, etc. through fun Halloween images.

Halloween Buckets Pocket Game encourages active learning. Students physically match and “feed” the buckets with candies and word cards, turning learning into a fun interactive experience.

Halloween Buckets Cup Game. Use the same printables from the game above. Use real cups to glue the bucket onto each. Students match the candy and word cards to each Halloween bucket (now on cups) to strengthen both picture–word and word–object associations.

Counting 1 to 10 Halloween Bats on a TREE

The combination of Halloween Bats and Trees allows students to practice numbers and simple sentences while connecting new words to concepts they already know.

The flashcards help kindergarten ELLs connect numerals, number words, and quantities in a visual and engaging way.

Order the Trees Flashcards. Mix up the cards and have students put them in the correct order from 1 to 10.

Ask & Answer – Teacher: “How many bats are on the tree?” Student: “There are five bats.”

Use the flashcards as a guide and have students build the number words with foam letters. Alongside, they can also create the matching numeral with foam numbers. This hands-on activity helps reinforce spelling, connects the written numeral with the number word.

Show a flashcard as a reference and have students write the matching numeral and number word on the whiteboard or blackboard. This activity encourages active recall, reinforces correct spelling.

Small cards allow children to handle and manipulate them individually or in pairs, making learning more active.

They can be used for games such as bowling. Paste the small cards onto small plastic cups to create bowling pins. Students roll a soft ball to knock down the “pins,” then read aloud the numeral and number word on the cups they’ve knocked over. This activity combines movement with learning and number recognition.

Number Line – Mix the small cards; students arrange them from 1 to 10. Students create a number line by clipping them onto a string with clothespins. Once complete, the number line can be hung in the classroom as both decoration and a learning tool. This display not only brightens up the room with a seasonal touch but also serves as a handy reference for students to check numbers and number words throughout the unit.

Make the crowns and then make sentence patterns: There are two bats on the purple tree. Students will line up in front of the board and the rest of class will point and make sentences.

Place numbers on one side of the table and bat trees on the other; students match them correctly.

 

The feed me box is easy to assemble and play games.

Worksheets let children practice counting, number recognition, and writing in a quiet, focused way after playing games with flashcards.

Trace the Numbers – Trace numerals 1–10 and number words (one, two, three...). Cut out the trees with the bats and glue them under the correct number word.

Each bat on the tree has a numeral; students color it according to a code (e.g., 1 is brown).

This resource includes two dice templates that you can easily assemble and use in many activities. The dice add an element of fun.  Ideas for Use:

Roll and Say: Students roll a die and say the number or number word out loud.

Roll and Write: Roll the dice and write the numeral or number word .

Roll and Jump (TPR): After rolling, students do that number of jumps, claps, or other actions for a kinesthetic practice.

 

Teachers can laminate the mats and use them year after year with dry-erase markers or counters. There are three mats (numerals, number words, and bat trees).

Students pick one card, for example, the numeral 5. They then find the number word “five” and the tree with 5 bats and place together.

Students point to a number on the mats and say it:It's number four!

Use all the cards in the mat and make a matching game on the pocket chart if you have one or on a table.

The three mats come in a black and white version for other activities, such as using the dice the students color the quantity, number or numeral on the dice.

Another mat for writing the numeral and number word.

There are letter tiles for making numbers words or any other vocabulary that you are working on.

I love to include board games for those 5 minutes before the class ends!

Mini Booklet – Each page shows a tree with bats. Students color the number: “This tree has 4 bats.” Each page combines the numeral, word, and visual. Students count the bats on the tree, color them, then say the sentence: “There are three bats.” Then, take turns “reading” their booklet to the teacher or a partner.

This resource blends seasonal excitement with language learning. Seasonal images like cupcakes, skulls, and other Halloween items give children context-rich visuals that make new words easier to remember.

Activities like hopping on the flash card transform vocabulary review into a movement-based game.

Physical involvement such as or swatting the word on the flashcard keeps young learners engaged and increases focus, especially for students with shorter attention spans.

Matching the small cards cupcakes, to the Halloween items will sharpen observation and attention to detail in English learning.

Handling and arranging the tiles boost letter knowledge. Children figure out the letter order themselves, which builds confidence and self-correction habits.

Reveal-and-write game, which adds surprise and keeps students curious. Staple a colored paper on top of each card. Students lift the flap and read the revealed word and then writing it, reinforcing both skills.

This worksheet combines vocabulary, colors, and early writing skills in a single activity. Students connect the written color word (“orange”) to the actual color by coloring the item correctly.

Candy Corn Numbers Worksheets
On the first worksheet, there are jars filled with different quantities of candy corn (from 1 to 10). On the second worksheet, there are numerals and number words. The teacher gives listening instructions such as “Color the jar with three candy corns blue”. Students listen, color the correct jar, then cut and paste the matching numeral or word.

These worksheets combine listening comprehension with color recognition. The teacher calls out simple sentences such as “Color the witch hat black!” Students listen and color it according to the instruction. This develops listening skills. The activity is ideal for whole-class listening practice.

Pocket Chart Word–Picture Match
Students use the pocket chart to match each Halloween word card to the correct picture card on the chart. This activity helps learners connect written words with visual meaning, improving vocabulary recognition, reading skills, and word–image association in a fun, interactive way.

 

Halloween Board Game Activity for
reviewing vocabulary. Students take turns rolling a die and moving their game marker along the path. Each square features a different Halloween image. When students land on a space, they must say the vocabulary word or use it in a sentence. The first player to reach the “Finish” wins! This game can be played in pairs.

Candy Corn Numbers Matching Mats
This set includes three colorful matching mats: Candy Corn Jar Mat, Numeral Mat and the Number Word Mat – displays the words one to ten.

Students match the jars to the corresponding numerals and number words, reinforcing quantity recognition, numeral reading, and number word spelling

Feed Me Box Game
