Teaching vocabulary through a fun and engaging theme like the circus helps young English Language Learners connect language with meaningful experiences. These Circus Unit flashcards are designed to introduce vocabulary through visual support, movement, and interactive activities, allowing students to build confidence while learning new words.
Circus Unit Vocabulary Presentation
Consolidate vocabulary in a ludic way. Circus Vocabulary Flashcards are a way to
help your students to improve their visual memory and focus on learning the new
vocabulary.
Use the Circus Flashcards to introduce the new
words. Have the students identify Circus animals and people.
People at the Circus (WHO Questions)
People
work at the Circus, present them all together and ask questions with WHO?
Teacher: Who is this ?
Students: The clown!
Circus Food Vocabulary
There is food at the Circus. Review or introduce
what people usually eat at the Circus, have them guess and pull out the
flashcard.
Parts of the Face (Clown Activity)
Review the parts of the face using
the clown flashcard. Include: ears, eyes, face, mouth, nose.As a teacher, use your chalk to collaboratively write the word for each part of face with your students. Reread the words with your students as a revision with them.
Body Parts Review
Using the clown again, students can review parts of the body, connecting vocabulary with real-life references and improving comprehension through visual support.
The clothes can also be reviewed.
Animals Vocabulary
In most circus settings there are animals or least
there used to be. Review the animals by using the train with animals flashcards
set. Put the train flashcards with zoo animals to play a review game. Use the
pointer arrow that you can make using the templates.
Teacher:
Point to the elephant!
Color Sorting Activity
The colors can be put into practice.Sorting circus items by color helps students develop both vocabulary and categorization skills. This type of activity strengthens visual discrimination and memory.
Here’s another example.
Identification Game (Pointer Activity)
Prompt
the students to identify
the circus vocabulary flashcards
using the arrow pointer or any other that you might have. If the student
identifies the flashcard, take it off the board and give it to him/her. If not,
continue with another student.
Student: Magician!
Throw the ball
game
Find a very soft and
harmless ball to have the students throw to the Circus Flashcard that you name from a distance. Students love playing with a ball and they can get extremely excited.
Student: tent!
Circus includes a balancing act!
I bought the hat
at a party store. Have the students walk with the flashcard on the hat as they
say the name of flashcard.
Beanbag Game
Throw a beanbag to
the favorite item in the circus. Line up the flashcards on the floor or desk.
Name an item and have the student throw the bean bag to it.
Make the beanbag using felt and the templates
provided. I made the ticket beanbag as my example. You can make several beanbags
in different colors.
