Shapes Theme Book and Games for Kindergarten ELL

This is the fifth theme from the series of 30 units for the Preschool-Kindergarten English Language Learners (ESL Kids). Here are some teaching tips for the production part of lesson plan, I would say the fun part for students and teachers. Shapes Unit Printable Book.  Literacy starts with the understanding of print. It's all about making sure that children will read from left to right in this case.

Students color the shapes as indicated in the sentence. They also trace the sentences.  Assemble the book and practice reading.  I assembled mine using a brass fastner on a corner. It looks fun and easy to read even online because it opens like a fan. The size is good enough for teaching online.

Shapes Unit Bingo is always a favorite and it can be done in class or online.  Give the students their Bingo template. Have them color all the shapes that you are focusing on Tell the students that they can only color the items in any of the six colors of your cards: red, yellow, blue, orange, green. purple.  Put all your cards in a bag or box. At your signal start calling the colors. Have them cross out or mark the item they hear. If you want to play a shorter Bingo game, take out colors. For example, just play with the primary colors.

Use the matching word cards along with the bingo numbers.

Students can sort the Bingo shapes using the Bingo template, either use the already made teacher's calling cards or just trace and cut each shape onto colored cardboard.

I have these color splotches to place on the wall for sorting. I made them using a worksheet from the colors unit as a model to trace onto colored construction paper. Start sorting the BINGO shapes with your students.

Or just print these new pattern strips  and use the Bingo calling cards for your students to recreate the pattern.

 Shapes Unit Games!

Shape magnifying glasses to find similar shapes. Print and glue onto clear plastic, either plastic sheets, contact paper.Add a craft stick and there you have a puppet fror your students to wonder around the classroom finding any matching shape object.

Have students use "a" in phrases as they find objects: a circle!

Sorting shapes!I printed the images onto colored paper. Then cut and paste onto lunch bags. I used the Bingo cards to sort into the bags.

Cut all the puzzle pieces. Play a group game as you give each student a piece of a puzzle. Place the other piece somewhere around the class. At your signal, have them run and find the piece and complete a number.

Another kind of puzzle, as students match all the same shapes. Print the templates, cut and get ready.

Students can work individually or in small groups sorting the pictures by shape.

A shapes unit game board. I made in two different sizes for the needs of your class.
