This is the first blog post for the Routine Verbs for Kindergarten ESL. The complete resource is available at the TPT store:
Routine Verbs Flashcards to introduce the simple present. Use the flashcards to motivate speaking and play games in class. Talk about personal hygiene as in brushing their teeth, hair and more to activate oral language.
The flashcards would include: go home, eat breafast (lunch, dinner),take a bath,go to bed(school),do homework, wash hands (face),brush hair (teeth), get dressed, make the bed, pick up toys, sleep.
Introduce the parts of the day (morning, noon, night)using the flashcards. Have students relate what is done during the day and night.
Place the parts of the
day flashcards on the board and have your students say what they
usually do in the morning, as in my example and put the routine flashcard as in
a mind map format. Students can also describe ongoing actions.
Teacher: What is the boy doing?
Students: He is eating breakfast.
Ask personal questions :
Teacher: When do you eat breakfast?
Students: I eat breakfast in the morning.
Continue
with the afternoon flashcard. Ask questions.
Teacher: What do eat for lunch every day?
Students
answers will vary.
Ask for every meal: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
- Use the Parts of the house flashcards to have the students sort where the routines are taken place.
- Show your students a flashcard and have the class mime the action for the new expression. Teacher: He washes his hands with soap.
Teacher: What is this?
Students: a toothbrush (mime brushing their
teeth)
Have your students identify grooming items .They can make sentences as your model. Use the flashcards to help.
Teacher: Can you brush your teeth by yourself?Students: Yes.
Ask questions:
Teacher: What do you need to brush your hair?
Students: I need a brush.
Teacher: You brush your teeth with a toothbrush.
- Use
the flashcards to ask ability questions.
Teacher: Can you brush your teeth?
Students: Yes!
