Teaching community helpers vocabulary becomes meaningful when students can see, practice, and interact with the content.

These printable worksheets are designed for preschool and kindergarten ESL learners to build vocabulary, develop fine motor skills, and connect language with real-life jobs in their community.


Activity-Small cards  Worksheet on the table. 

Students will color and cut into cards the printable worksheets. 
Spread the small cards on the table. Students take turns to point to a card and name it. If the students named it right, he/she can take the card. If the student is wrong, he/she can’t take it. The student with the most cards wins as they were able to identify the workers.

 OPOSICIÓN

Make a game board on the floor using their cards. Lay the small cards in a simple game board design.

Worksheets can be used as a warm up for reviewing the town buildings or as filler for those days that you need extra practice. This is a set of 4 worksheets, which can be done as a group work. Students will trace the path as a skill that should develop. Later, the worksheets can be cut into pieces and create a puzzle to put up on a pocket chart.
Students will follow the path from the community helpers to the tools they use, or the hat they wear to work, the place they work at or the vehicle they drive.

After introducing vocabulary and practicing with small cards, students need opportunities to use language in a meaningful and interactive way.

These Community Helpers cutouts are perfect for creating hands-on ESL activities that promote speaking, movement, and real communication. They allow students to act out roles, make connections, and use vocabulary in complete sentences.

Cutouts are especially effective for young learners because they turn learning into play, helping students stay engaged while building confidence in English.


     Use the Community Helpers cutouts for writing for those students who are ready for that. Use the small cards or the flashcards as a guide. Have your students use subject pronouns instead of names.

🗣️ Speaking Activity: Where Do They Work?

·       Glue the town buildings onto cardboard. Open a slit in the middle and slide a piece of the cardboard to make the building stand. Add an opened clip behind each community helper cutout.

Students will associate the workers to their workplace. Place the town building on a table and have the students place the community helpers where they work.
Ask questions:
Teacher: Where is the firefighter?
Students: at the fire station.

Teacher: Where does the doctor work?
Students: The doctor works at the hospital.

Teacher: Is the mail carrier at the post office?
Students: Yes, he is.

 You can also introduce the community helpers and their transportation vehicles. Print the road templates to place the vehicles.
Teacher: Where is the police car?
Students: At the police station.

🧩 Matching Activity: Helper + Word

  Print the community helpers word cards and have the students place each person cutout on each word.

Ask questions.
Teacher: Who's this?
Students: He's the cook.

Teacher: What is the cook wearing?
Students: He's wearing a hat, a coat, pants and shoes.

Role Play with Cutouts

Turn the cutouts into puppets by attaching them to craft sticks. Students can act out different roles:“I am a teacher.”  “I help students.”  “I work at school.”

Role play encourages creativity and helps students use language naturally.

After introducing community helpers vocabulary with flashcards, it’s important to give students opportunities to practice and use the new words in an interactive way.

These Community Helpers small cards are perfect for hands-on activities, helping preschool and kindergarten ESL learners develop speaking skills, recognition, and confidence. Small cards are especially effective because they allow every student to actively participate during the lesson.

  Students can recognize and name the facial features of the community helpers as they name each one. You can also name the body parts.Make small pointers out of a craft stick and a pompom or a sticker.

First, ask the question: Who's this?
Students: the firefighter!
Have the students point to the parts of the face as you name and they repeat the word.

      I saw this idea and had to give it a try. I placed all the Community Helpers small cards on the table and using a flashlight, pointed to each card for the students to name the job.

Student: He's the farmer.

Discuss with your students what these community helpers do and what they work with.  Sort the vocabulary cards into community helpers, town buildings, vehicles, hats and things. This can also be done using the big flashcards.
