After introducing community helpers vocabulary with flashcards, it’s important to give students opportunities to practice and use the new words in an interactive way.
These Community Helpers small cards are perfect for hands-on activities, helping preschool and kindergarten ESL learners develop speaking skills, recognition, and confidence. Small cards are especially effective because they allow every student to actively participate during the lesson.
Using vocabulary cards in interactive games helps reinforce learning, improve memory, and support language development through repetition and movement.
facial features of the community helpers
Students can recognize and name the facial features of the community helpers as they name each one. You can also name the body parts.Make small pointers out of a craft stick and a pompom or a sticker.
First, ask the question: Who's this?
Students: the firefighter!
Have the students point to the
parts of the face as you name and they repeat the word.
Clothes the community helpers wear
Teacher: This is the doctor. What is this?
Students: It's a coat.
Teacher: What color is the coat?
Students: white.
Teacher: What is she wearing?
Students: She is wearing blue pants and a blue hirt.
I
saw this idea and had to give it a try. I placed all the Community Helpers small cards on the
table and using a flashlight,
pointed to each card for the students to name the job.
Teacher: Who's he?
Student: He's the farmer.
In this activity, students use the small picture cards and place them in the correct category on the sorting mat created by the teacher. The five categories are: ⭐ Things,⭐ Vehicles,⭐ Hats,⭐ Town,⭐ Community Helpers
Children look at each picture, identify the vocabulary word, and decide where it belongs.
This sorting activity helps students: Develop classification and critical thinking skills.
The sorting mat can be used during whole-group instruction or literacy centers.
Point to different community helpers and have the students identify them. Match the
community helpers small cards to their cutouts that I taped an opened clip behind.
