Insects Unit Resource

A set of many insects flashcards to use for presentation purpose of the lesson: butterfly, bee, ant, ladybug, moth, grasshopper, firefly, fly and others.

Practice the flashcards as much as you can to ensure that your students can identify and name them all.
Place several Insects flashcards on the board and ask students: What can you see? using the magnifying glass. I made them using contact paper on both sides of the templates.
Have the students count the spots on the ladybug, or the dots on the moth.

With the insects in each color it is easy to ask: What color is it?

Also have the students sort the insects flashcards by color on the board.

·       Have four or more students come to the front and give an insect flashcard to each one. Say the order of how they have to stand one next to the other. Have the class judge if they are right.

Another slow reveal flashcard activity that I gave it a try. Paint several squares from a cardboard box. Place them over the flashcard and have the students ask you which one to take out. The students have to guess which insect is there.

Hand in the yes/No pencils cards puppets. Ask questions and students answer and show the yes or no puppet.
Teacher: Is this a bee?
Students: NO! It’s a butterfly
. (Showing the No puppet)

Take a look!

Students will talk about the parts of the body of any insect. Place any flashcard on the board and write the parts of the body that the students already know, then, show them the other body parts and write the new word.

Teacher: What is this?
Students: It's a yellow and black bee.

·       Have the students use the magnifying glass to show the body parts on the flashcards.

Student: antennas, wings!

Use the magnifying glass and the flashcards for speaking opportunities.

If not, make a pointer using a fun foam image and a craft stick and have the students identify the body parts of any insect.

Show the students a random bee number flashcard and say a different number.
   Teacher: five!
Students: NO!!! eight. (correcting the teacher)

Take a look on how I did the wrong number activity.

Hand in all the bees numbers flashcards and have the students stand in the correct order and show his/her card and say the number as you previously modeled.
Student A: Bee number one!
Student B: Bee number two!

·       Place the number flashcards into a clear plastic sheet and have the students draw the amount of insects on each number using a dry erase marker.

Use the flashcards to match the beehive to the numbers on the board or on the floor.

Review the emotions with bees flashcards.
Teacher: Make a happy face like the bee.

Students can identify and say the name of the shapes of each insect as they sort the flashcards on the board.

Place these flashcards on the board to ask questions.
Teacher: What does Rick have?
Students: three fireflies!

Insects unit Commands flashcards.Use these to talk about the real actions that insects do.

  Play Do like me!
Teacher: Look at the ant! Stand up like the ant!

These flashcards work well to introduce the present continuous.
Teacher: The ant is walking?
