Take your Pets Unit to the next level with these engaging cutouts activities for Kindergarten ESL.
These Pets Unit Cutouts are designed to help young English language learners actively use vocabulary through movement, speaking, and hands-on interaction. Cutouts are perfect for small hands and can be used on the board, table, or even online, allowing students to practice real communication in a meaningful way.
At this stage, students move beyond recognition and begin to produce language using complete sentences and structured interaction.
🗣️ Speaking Practice with Cutouts
Place the cutouts on the board or a table. Ask the students what they want? Each student will come to the front grab a cutout and say the sentence that you have modeled.
Teacher: I want a rabbit (grab a rabbit and hug it)Student: I want a turtle. (grabs the turtle)
There
are several sets, but I made only two examples. This
is the bird one. I used the cage to add a little crafting as it is to glue yarn
on the cage. There are the colored birds and the black/white ones for you to
choose from. Name the bird that students have to put inside the cage. There are
three options to do it.Teacher: Put the yellow bird in the cage. Or, Put the big
yellow bird in the cage. Or, put the big, circle, yellow bird in the cage. You
can also put the birds in the cage and have the students point to them.Teacher: show me
the big triangle bird.
Give instructions to the students:
The other example is with the fish aquarium. The same
goes with these cutouts.
Students can use this grammar structure: Look! This is my triangle fish.
I
recycled old CDs and glued a pet cutout onto each one besides adding a craft
stick. Small enough for online.
I also like to recycle French fries containers for hands-on sorting activities. They are inexpensive, easy to prepare, and make learning extra fun for young learners. For this activity, I created a Big and Small sorting game using the Pets cutouts.
To make the containers more appealing, I decorated them with fun foam and foil letters to label each category. Students simply pick a pet cutout and decide whether it belongs in the BIG or SMALL container. This interactive activity reinforces size concepts.
Teacher: Is this a big rabbit?
Students: Yes, it is!
Teacher: Is this a small bird?
Students: Yes, it is!
Sorting the Pets Cutouts by Shapes
And here is another fun sorting activity! Use the pet cutouts to review the four basic shapes. Prepare sorting containers labeled with circle, triangle, square, and rectangle. Then, have the students pick a pet and place it into the correct shape category.
As they sort, encourage the children to identify both the animal and its shape.
Teacher: What shape is this?
Students: Triangle!
Teacher: What animal is it?
Students: It's a rabbit!
You can use all the pet cutouts or select just a few for younger learners.
Use
the labels for the students that are ready to read the words.
