Teaching food vocabulary to young English language learners becomes much more effective when students can see, touch, and interact with the language. These Food Unit Small Cards are a simple but powerful tool to introduce and practice food vocabulary in a fun, meaningful way.
In this post, you’ll find easy, low-prep activities to help your kindergarten ELL students develop speaking, listening, and early writing skills using small cards—perfect for centers, small groups, and online lessons.
Vocabulary Introduction (Speaking)
Introduce or Review the new food vocabulary
in a playful way. Students can identify and name the food and drinks using the small cards.
Teacher: What is this?
Stuents: pizza!! It's pizza.
This is another linguistic competence to develop with your class.Use the cards as help for writing the words. Use the cards as a bridge to writing.
Place a food small card for a student to write on paper or any other material and then ask questions.
Teacher: What's this?
Student: It's pizza.
Feed Me Game
Create
a feed me box using a recycled cereal box, and the lemonade printable template. Use the small cards to
feed the lemonade. Tell the students that the lemonade is hungry or thirsty.
Teacher: The lemonade is hungry! Feed the lemonade, french fries.
Make food puppets with the small cards to teach
online or with small groups. Ask the students what they want as you show the puppets.
Teacher: What do you want?
Student: I want fries, please!
Teacher: Here.
Student: thank you.
Express likes about food items using the simple present statements using the 1st person singular.
Teacher: What do you like?
Student: I like orange juice!
This exercise is great to introduce functional language such as thank you, please.
