Transportation Unit Flashcards for Kindergarten English Language Learners

Transportation Unit Flashcards to identify and describe vehicles. Use them for more repetition and get your students to memorize those new words. Play with the flashcards as much as you can. There are several activities to do in class. The set includes: car, bus,boat, plane,train, truck,bike, helicopter,ship.

    Review the key language: What is this?

Place all the same kind of transportation flashcards on the board. Say a model sentence and have the students repeat.

Teacher: It’s a yellow car!

Students: It’s a blue car!

Then, students can identify the colors of all the cars.

   Ask questions with the motorcycle flashcards.

Teacher: What's this?

Students: It's a motorcycle.

                 Use the trucks flashcards for even more speaking!

Teacher: What color is this truck?

Students: white! It's a white truck.

     Place all your students in a large circle depending on how many students you have in class. Hand in a flashcard to each student. Name a flashcard. Teacher: car!
That student with the car flashcard must say the word and show his/her flashcard to the circle. Then, he/she says another word from the flashcards within the circle of the students.
Student 1: truck!
Continue with more students.

 What color is it?
Place the flashcards on the board and ask questions.
Teacher: What is this?
Students: a car!
Teacher: What color is it?
Students: yellow!
Teacher: It’s a yellow car!

     Is it big or small?
Have the students sort the flashcards into big or small on the board.
Teacher: It’s a big airplane!
Students: It’s a small airplane.
or
Teacher: This car is big!
Students: This car is small.

·    Distinguish between  Long and short. More adjectives to include during this unit for the students to identify the tranportation vehicles by length. Sort the vehicles into long and short.
Teacher: It’s a long truck!
Students: It’s a short truck.
Ask questions.
Teacher: Is this train long or short?
Students: It’s short .

Introduce left and right using the flashcards. Have the students sort the transportation vehicles by how they are facing either left or right.

These flashcards work for introducing new and old.

Teacher: This is a new car. This is an old car.

 Students will recognize where the vehicles belong: air, water, land.
How does the vehicle travel?
Teacher: The bus travels on land.
Students: The truck travels on land.
Continue with water and air.
Teacher: Where is the ship?
Students: It's on the water.
Teacher: Where does the bus go?
Student: It goes on land.

   Verbs related to the vehicles. Have the students imitate the actions as you show the flashcard.
Teacher: Fly the plane!!
Drive the train!!

Ride the bicycle!

Students will discuss that people use different means of transportation.

Ask questions with HOW?

Teacher: How are you going to school?

Student: I am going by car.

      Ask your students and graph how they come to school.

    Count the doors and windows in each vehicle. Make a graph. Students can also sort by doors, wheels and by color of the vehicles.

Community Helpers Printable book

Using a printable book in your ESL classroom helps students connect images with vocabulary.

Read to your young students as you expose them to the language enriching vocabulary that they already know. Include this in your English Lesson plan for your kids.

Remember to ask questions about the pictures. The students can have the books to take home and read with their parents. Print the books on card stock instead of paper for durability. This book is interactive as students cut and paste the community helpers to their work space. Pasting is also a fine motor skill to develop at this age.

Send the book home with students! It will encourage repetition.

Vocabulary-Based craft Activity for the Community Helpers 

Moving those little fingers will help with the fine motor skills as they express themselves making their favorite community helper. Glue the facial features, hair and hats onto a paper plate to make their favorite community helper. There you have puppets for many other activities.

Students can point to each one and identify them.

Students can identify and name each facial features and hats.

Community Helpers Rewards

Hand in the Badge as a positive reinforcement for the best behavior or student participation. Say why you are giving the student the reward. It can be done after an assessment.

This is a perfect interactive education tool for the listening skill. Students have to be alert to play and win.

And once again practicing the rules for the games and take turns to play with patience. Print the student’s template and the community helper’s templates that will be one set for every 4 students. They will cut, paste and color their own Bingo template. Have your calling cards ready to play. You can mime the calling cards to make it more interesting.

Half card game can give your students the confidence to learn the vocabulary as they gain emotional and educational benefits. Print the template and turn it into a file folder game.

Community Helpers Puzzles.

Students put the pieces together to make a whole community helper with the items that relate to him or her. Concentration is the ability that they will to learn to figure this game out. It can also be played as a memory game.

·       Board games for logical thinking skills. Give simple instructions to go around the board. Just print the game for an easy setup. Moving up the boards depends on your student’s ability to recognize the community helpers. By playing the Board game students will be counting in English and recognizing the vocabulary from the unit.
