Birthday Unit and Celebrations for Kindergarten ELL

                                      Wrap up the unit!

Add fun cutouts to the buttons of any cardigan.

Birthday Unit Craft. Students will actively produce the language learned and focus on the words related to art, such as, cut, paste, glue, color. Make a party hat with your students. I used finger paints to color the hat. I added yarn and plastic beads. Students will color their age number and glue onto the hat. It is a way to recycled the numbers already learned.

Another craft. Ghost painting with Birthday Vocabulary. Print and cut the birthday pictures. Hand them in to the students as they will trace each one with a white crayon onto a white construction paper.  Then have them paint over each traced item with watercolor paints as the images will come alive. You can write the word for each one as the students tell you what item showed up.

Birthday Unit Commands Flashcards. Show the students each flashcard and have them mime the action.

Teacher: Cut the cake! Students mime  the action as they see the flashcard.

Hand in a reward. I made a balloon with the reward on it.  There are three sizes of printables depending of the size of the balloons that will use. Students will have fun playing with the balloon at home or in class. As you give them the balloon tell him or her how was their performance during the unit.

Teacher: Tomas, here is your balloon. You did a great job completing all the worksheets

Celebrations can be included in this unit.

 Soon will be Valentine's Day!!

First of all, the Flashcards. They come with all the food for the Valentine's Day party and the items realted to the festivity. Name a birthday name and students have to point.

Teacher: Point to the cake!

Ask students if they can find shapes within the flashcards.

Teacher: Can you see a triangle?

Studnts: yes, the hat!

Teacher: Can you see a circle?

Studnts: yes, the candy!

Teacher: What shape is present?

Studnts: rectangle!

Then, there is a set of small cards for printer friendly or just for small groups activities. Easy to print and cut.

I made a pointer using fun foam a Valentine heart that I had glued onto a craft rod. Make one and use yours to use it for students to point out a card as you name them.

Teacher: mailbox!

Games are good for developing collaboration competencies in your students. They will learn to take turns and encourage their partners to succeed in the game.Play the jewel game using heart fun foam pieces. Students will place a fun foam piece as they the object on the small card.

You can also make a dice to play game, there are enough cards to make several of them. I used recycled kleneex boxes and glued the cards.

Or make Valentine's Day stick puppets! Use it model langauge for your students.

If you cut the small cards into picture and word you have a  matching game.

Many children are into writing. Have them write the words using the cards as a model.

Play Bingo!

Or a play a Valentine's Day Words Domino.

I added NEW YEAR! Children can make their New Year Hats. Basically, top hats. There are two options, one to just color, add a strip of paper to adjust to hat.

The fun Production part of the lesson plan. Games and activities for further reinforcement of the birthday theme.

Let’s make a Birthday printable book to spark an interested in the students for reading. This is further practice within the unit. I add sight words that are common for EFL that will improve reading fluency in the future.

Establish the context of the story by asking questions about the cover of the book. Show the cake on the cover, the candles.

 Students will cut and paste the corresponding word to each page as they read the sentence. You can dictate to your students the color of each birthday item. Have them demonstrate the understanding of the story. Ask questions: What is this?, What color is the cake?, Do you like cake?

Birthday Unit Pocket chart: use it as a repetition of the birthday words. Students can work on their own as they match the pictures to the words. Place the words and pictures on the pocket chart and point to each one as the whole class reads them all.

Place only the pictures and hand in the words as the students come and place it next to the correct picture.

Have yur students name all the food that you eat at a party. Then, name all the items that you see.

Games will spell success for your lessons and actively play in class.

Domino Game is great for critical thinking and memory.

Board Game. Playing with parents at home or with the classmate will teach cooperation as they will have to take turns with the die and wait for the other students to move their character.

Bingo will promote oral language as students will talk about the items that they have crossed out and the ones missing.

Half card game. Use the cards as puzzles to improve logical thinking skills as they match all the cards. They can do the puzzles alone or with another classmate.

Birthday Unit Worksheets for Kindergarten ELL

The practice part of the lesson plan for this age-appropiate topic which is the Birthday Unit will include worksheets.

I use this set of worksheets as the student’s small flashcards. They can be used to play many games throughout the unit. It comes with traceable words. Give students instructions for coloring the Birthday objects.

Teacher: Color the ice cream brown and pink.

     Students will identify the  colors for  the birthday objects.              Ask questions: What are these?

Students: They're balloons.

Review the Numbers Birthday Worksheets. Count the candles on the cake.
Teacher: Let's count the candles. How many candles are there on the cake?
Students: four!

Dictate the colors of each candle.

Teacher: Look for candle number two! Color the candle number two yellow.

Students cut all the candles and make a number line or place the number candles in a number sequence.

Two worksheets to match the cakes with the number candles to the words. It can be either paste each cake on top of each number. It can be used as cards to match numbers and words.

I had the students color the word and the number on the cake the same color.

Teacher: Find number 8. Color the word eight purple. Color the number eight on the cake.

Always fun, the color by number worksheets.

Describe the emotion on the cupcakes! Students can talk about the feelings they drew on the party hat of this worksheet.

Balloon and words. Dictate the color of each birthday item.
Teacher: The cake is green.

Another worksheet to review on how to say one's age.The language is:  How old are you?

Students will color and paste the amount of candles of their age. Then, they will show their cake and say: I am five years old.
