Zoo animals Unit Games for Kindergarten ESL

Bowling GAME with zoo animals water bottles. Pictures will always help students remember the vocabulary faster.I cut off the tap of the bottle and a little below. I glued the animal template.  Give your students a ball to toss and throw to the zoo animal. This game also keeps a focus on eye-hand coordination including spatial awareness. It is also a great speaking game as they name the animal they knocked.

BINGO and language go together, it improves the listening and speaking skills. Students get to listen to the word and they usually repeat several times to make sure they heard it right or to say to another classmate.

The domino game works with simple to recognize  patterns as they match the pictures and name them. Play with 5 to 7 domino unit per student. This kind of game sharps the child's hand-eye coordination.

The file folder game is an opportunity for extra practice in small groups. Play during those last 10 minutes of the class as a wrap up.

Reinforce social emotional expressions. It’s a sorting game but you can adapt the cards any way you need for your specific group. Students will describe the feeling on each card.

Students can take the file folder game home to reinforce the shapes with their parents. This game aims to have the students classify the zoo animals by their shape.

Board games are considered boring for some but children enjoy a fun game that doesn´t take long and that they can play on their own. You can print a one page game board or print two pages and glue them and make a bigger one.

Half card games are great for helping your student’s attention to detail as they classify the cards to make a zoo animal.

Pocket charts. I intend this printable to be used on a pocket chart, but you can use anywhere, on a desk, on the floor, a wall, on the board, you name it.

Students can be teachers as they match the words to the pictures with another student.

Students can make sentences on their own. It's important to use the pictures to show that words have meaning.

Zoo animals Unit Worksheets for Kindergarten ESL

 An optional resource to review the theme. So many teachers love this kind of materials as an extension for learning.

There is a set of zoo animal worksheets that can be turned into small flashcards for your students to keep for games or to take home. Use them to collaborate to memorize the new vocabulary in the zoo unit. You can make the readers to make it fun to read the print word and to recognize the zoo animal picture.

The cards can be sorted into the category of the amount of legs the zoo animals have.

A couple of easy and fun review of the colors by number worksheets.

There is a set of the zookeepers to color their clothes as a review of that unit and more words to label.Gluing is an essential skill to practice in class.

Worksheets reinforce concepts already learned during the English class. The body unit is usually taught before the animals. Students will identify animals body parts.

Worksheets usually need little assistance from you. Students can easily trace the face of each zoo animal in the color that you or they dictate. They can also color the word and cut the animals’ faces by themselves. And even more match the word to each zoo animal.

Use the worksheets to check student progress in the language. Use this set of worksheets as a listening opportunity. Give instructions for coloring  each zoo animal and the race car.
Teacher: What is it?
Students: It's a lion.
Color the lion yellow! Color the race car green.
Go even further by having the students label the cars with a number.
Teacher: The car with the lion is number one!

Students can cut the zoo animals in the cars and glue them onto toilet paper rolls and make a race! Add puppets to your lesson plan for speking interaction for your students.

And there is another set of zoo animals in jeeps. It goes along a printable book added to this resource. You can use the book to read as the students color the jeeps. There is a zoo animal words printable to label the pictures in the worksheets.

Peer learning can be done with the zoo scene. Give a set of worksheets to a group of two or three students so they can assemble their zoo in any way they want.

A Zoo Number review using this set of worksheets that can be done by groups. I created a poster by gluing them in a vertical way.Ask the students to count the animals next to each number.
Teacher: How many lions are there?
Students: There are five lions.

More numbers as students match the monkey numbers cards to the words for strong number sense ability. Have the students color the numbers as you indicate.
Teacher: Color number 1 green!
They can finish coloring the pictures.

Help develop number sense at this learning stage with even more practice with the penguins. Dictate the color of each number and then students glue the word next to each number. Even further, have the students cut all the penguins and place them in numerical order.

 You can use the worksheets as you teach this concept with the flashcards or cutouts. Students will associate the zoo animal to what they eat as they draw those items.

Help your students express their emotions or feelings in English with the basics such as happy, sad or angry to collaborate to their Emotional Intelligence though the zoo animals.
Ask questions:  Is the lion happy or sad?

Shapes are everywhere in real life, let your students recognize the shapes with the zoo animals by paying attention to the details. After the worksheets are done, I had the students sort the zoo animals by shapes.

Use the worksheets to have the students remember concepts taught during the school year. There is a worksheet to draw the favorite zoo animal that can then be used to make a graph.

Teaching Resources

A set of coloring worksheets, use them as a listeing activity. Hand them in in random order and say: The zoo animals are at school!  Who has the elephant? Color the elephant gray!
Go on with the other animals.

Zoo Animals Unit CUTOUTS for Kindergarten ESL

Zoo Animals Cutouts.

 Elementary Teachers can promote literacy behaviors by providing children with inviting and stimulating play environments which include carefully chosen manipulatives and authentic props.

Create your zoo animal 3D scene. It can be used for dramatic play where your students can assume the role of a zoo animal and act as that animal, such as making the sound or the movement. Imagination is all that your students need. The scene is great for the students identify the zoo animals and describing their location.
Ask questions: Where is the monkey?
Students: It's on the tree.

Where is the lion?
Students: It's behind the tiger.


Take a look on how to use the scene for speaking in class.

Feed me box. This activity can lead for students to interact. There are several zoo animals to pick from to make your feed me box. I use recycled cereal boxes for this. This kind of game is perfect to improve speaking in a fun way without the anxiety.

Teacher: What is this?
Student: It's a giraffe.

Teacher: What do giraffes eat?
Student: (picking the leaves cutout) Leaves!

Labeling is an easy activity to do with the cutouts. It connects print (a word) to a zoo animal picture. It helps to review vocabulary.

Teacher: Is this an elephant?
Student: yes, it is.

There is a set of cutouts letters to write zoo animals words. Use it with the cutouts, the worksheets, or the flashcards.

A mini unit to review the family members with BEARS!

Starting with flashcards, it only comes with mother, father, brother, sister and baby. The flashcards can be cut into strips and it turns into a puzzle.

The small cards can be good for copying the words using letters of the alphabet.

The gameboard is easy to set up for fun and easy review of the family bears.

Another game is BOWLING. Cut and paste the family members onto soda or water bottle. Start playing with a small ball. Students will say the family member word that is knocked. Good use of real English.

The finger puppet is a new idea that I tried. I found an old glove and cut the fingertips and glued the family members templates. Turned out easy to make. Students can express ownership and the family relationship using the pronoun my.
Student: This is my father! This is my mother!

Worksheets for extra practice. This is the bear house with the family members to cut and paste. You can also review the parts of the house.
