Vegetables Activities

Now, the veggies. My last blog post was about fruit.  You can either work each unit separately or join them and make a fruit and vegetable theme. You can mix and match the resources from the fruit unit. I only included: carrot, onion, tomato, potato.

I made this book to be used with the fruit book from last blog post and with the food book from a previous entry.

Reading is all about knowing the letters. Children must learn the correspondence of the letter and the sound. Fun and easy for the students to relate the letter to a vegetable.
 Tracing the letters and the word makes it easy for children to learn them. Children can have a designated finger to trace the letters and words as they read with you. Then, trace with crayons and name the vegetable.

Once again cutouts. Use them for recalling vegetable words and sorting.
And for counting and  identifying vegetable vocabulary.
Place the numbers on the board vertically. Attach the vegetables in any order. Point to the numbers only and have the students chorally identify them. Then, go on with the vegetables.

Teacher: Number 6 !
Students: potatoes.
Teacher: How many potatoes ?
Students:  five tomatoes.
Teacher: Let´s count! One, two, three, four , five potatoes. That´s right!
Repeat with all the numbers.

The cutouts can be transformed into puppets. Children can make their own puppets and decorate them in fancy materials, such as glitter, yarn. Puppets are thought to increase the attention span.

Help children remember by reviewing words from other themes and using them with a new theme. Learners need different contexts to truly learn new vocabulary. I used shapes for the fruit and now colors .I printed puzzle pieces in 6 colors, and placed a vegetable in each one.
Teacher: red.
Students: carrot.
Teacher: onions!
Student: purple.

Place the four cutouts on the table and place the potato first on the board.

Teacher: I like potatoes.
Then, place the tomato.
Teacher: I like tomatoes.
Do the same with the carrot. Place the onion below the other cutouts and say.
Teacher: I don´t like onions.
Use the like and don´t like face on the board to indicate like and don´t like. Students can come up front and place the cutouts next to the like and don´t like face as they want.

It can either be feed the pet or feed a family member using the cutouts.


And make a crown with the cutouts.

Have children color and cut all the vegetables. Tell them that they can make a soup or a salad for lunch. They choose which vegetables they will add and ones they don´t like. They can also add any other vegetable they wish and decorate their food using their creativity. When all the soups and salads are done, have them stand up and make a soup line and salad line. Count how many soups and how many salads are in class. Some students can come to the front and show their creation naming all the components.

Use the flashcards to introduce the new vocabulary. Hold them up high enough for all the students to see them and have them repeat chorally each word.  They work for drilling by flipping the cards at a fast pace as children name the words. As for practicing, place the flashcards in the class. Say a vocabulary word aloud and have students run to the flashcard, touch it and repeat the word.

Many teachers try to stay away from worksheets and move to play based activities. I intend that with every worksheet that you can do more than completing teacher directed tasks. Worksheets can be turned into a dynamic activity where children can easily be engaged.

Ws 1: I turned the worksheet into bookmarks.

Ws 2: review the parts of face and the emotions. Then cut them and glue onto colored paper. Make a class mural.

Ws 3: first color the pets as directed and then feed them. Discuss with the class what do these animals eat. Research that they almost can´t eat onions.

 Ws 4:  It´s a sorting worksheet. Children color and cut all the fruit and vegetables. Then glue in the designated box.
